Bristol’s a Blur: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. i landed in bristol yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. a weird, grey, slightly damp thing. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure’s at 1027, humidity’s hovering around 85 - feels like you’re wrapped in a wet blanket, you know? it’s not bad, just… persistent.
my phone’s flashing 2634825 and 1826528871. no idea what that means, probably just some random data. it’s giving me a headache. i’m a touring session drummer, so usually i’m chasing lights and adrenaline, but this is… different. it’s like the city’s exhaling a constant, low-level melancholy.
first thing i did was stumble into this pub called ‘The Plough’. it smelled like damp wool and old beer. someone told me that the landlord, a guy named Silas, keeps a collection of antique spoons. seriously. i’m not kidding. i also overheard a conversation about a secret underground network of tunnels - apparently, bristol was built on top of a Roman fort, and some folks still think there’s a whole other city beneath the streets. wild.
I spent the afternoon wandering around Clifton, dodging puddles and trying to capture the light. the architecture is seriously impressive - all those Victorian terraces. it’s giving me serious gothic vibes. i was trying to get some shots for my Instagram, but honestly, the rain was messing with my lens. it’s a struggle, let me tell you.
*Pro-Tip: Don’t wear white. Seriously. You’ll be a swamp monster by lunchtime. Also, check out Stokes Croft - it’s got a really cool street art scene. I found this amazing mural of a giant badger wearing a top hat. it was… unsettling, but in a good way.
I’m staying in a tiny Airbnb in Bedminster. it’s basically a glorified cupboard, but it’s got a decent view of the harbor. if you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away.
Someone at the pub said, ‘Don’t trust the pigeons. They know things.’ I’m not sure what that means, but it’s stuck with me.
I’m craving something spicy, so I’m heading to a place called ‘Spice Merchant’. Yelp says they have amazing vindaloo. fingers crossed.
Speaking of food, I heard that the best pasties in Bristol are at ‘The Pie Factory’. I’m not a pie person, usually, but I’m feeling adventurous. Plus, I need something to keep me going.
Here’s a quick gear list for Bristol (because, you know, organization):
Waterproof jacket (obviously)
Camera (and extra batteries - the rain sucks)
Notebook and pen (for scribbling down weird rumors)
Portable charger (because my phone is always dying)
A healthy dose of skepticism
I’m trying to find a decent coffee shop, but everything seems to be serving some kind of bizarre, oat-milk concoction. I just need a simple black coffee, you know? Like, a real coffee. I found a place called ‘Monk’s Brew’ - they seem to know what they’re doing.
I’m also trying to track down some local music venues. Bristol has a surprisingly vibrant music scene. I’m hoping to catch a gig at The Louisiana - it’s legendary.
Seriously, this city is… a lot. It’s chaotic, it’s rainy, and it’s full of strange stories. But there’s something about it that’s kind of captivating. I’m going to keep exploring, keep listening, and keep documenting it all.
