Bogotá Brain Dump: Lost in Translation & Coffee Dreams
okay, so bogotá. where do i even begin? i landed yesterday, and the air…it’s thick. like someone brewed a pot of coffee and then decided to hang it in the humidity. i’m a *Freelance Photographer, so naturally, my first mission was to find the best lighting. and the best coffee, obviously.
The numbers i saw floating around? 1261901 and 1356453583. i have no idea what they mean. i tried asking a guy selling empanadas, but he just shrugged and pointed at the line. it’s like the city speaks a different language, even when it's using universal symbols like delicious fried dough. the weather? i just checked and it’s…a perpetual spring, really. warm, a little damp, always hinting at rain but never quite delivering. hope you like that kind of thing.
my digs are…basic. a little apartment in La Candelaria. the neighbors are…loud. in a good way? there’s always music spilling out, people chatting, kids playing. it’s a constant hum of life. someone told me that the best street art is hidden down the smallest alleyways - i’m planning an expedition tomorrow. i'm hoping to snag some killer shots!
i've been trying to decode the local food scene. someone told me that the best arepas aren’t always from the most touristy places. and i heard that…well, let’s just say avoid the ice cream from the vendor near Plaza de Bolívar. someone told me that it’s an experience, but not a good one. definitely a tip to remember! you can find more reliable food reviews on Yelp.
Pro Tip: Learn a few basic Spanish phrases. Seriously. it goes a long way. 'Gracias', 'por favor', '¿Cuánto cuesta?' will be your new best friends.
I've been wandering around, soaking it all in. there’s a certain energy here, a chaotic beauty that’s both overwhelming and incredibly appealing. there’s a lot to see, and the architecture is just…wow. crumbling colonial buildings next to modern art galleries. it's a constant juxtaposition.
If you get bored, Medellín is just a short flight away. Bogotá* has a pulse, a rhythm. and right now, that rhythm’s got me hooked.
I'm thinking of checking out a tango show tonight. or maybe just find a quiet cafe and people-watch. or, you know, get lost in an alleyway and hope to stumble upon some amazing street art. that's the plan anyway. lots of cool stuff on TripAdvisor about tours, if you're looking for something structured.
And speaking of coffee… i'm officially obsessed. seriously. i found a little place in Usaquén that roasts their beans on-site. the aroma alone is intoxicating. i spent a good hour just chatting with the barista about the different origins.
Anyway, gotta go. the sun's setting, and i think i hear a salsa band starting up down the street. wish me luck. check out this article on Lonely Planet for more info on exploring Colombia! it's a great resource. And this link highlights great hostels for budget travelers in the area.
