Berlin's Grey Embrace: A Botanist's Unexpected Love Affair

okay, so berlin. i wasn’t expecting…this. i mean, i knew it’d be cool, edgy, full of history, all that jazz. but the grey. it’s a whole mood. i just checked and it’s drizzling a persistent, almost apologetic rain right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s not exactly sunshine and roses, you know? More like…moss and damp concrete. Which, honestly, as a botanist, is kind of…amazing.

I came here chasing rumors of some seriously weird urban flora. Apparently, there’s a whole underground network of people cultivating rare mosses and lichens in abandoned subway tunnels. Sounds like something out of a dystopian novel, right? I’m hoping to find some evidence. I’ve been wandering around *Kreuzberg for days, mostly just staring at walls and trying not to look like a complete weirdo.

I did stumble upon this incredible community garden near
Tempelhofer Feld. Seriously, it’s a riot of color and life in the middle of all this grey. People are growing everything - tomatoes, herbs, even some weird-looking peppers I’ve never seen before. I overheard someone - looked like a retired professor, judging by the tweed jacket - saying, “Don’t even think about touching the rhubarb. Frau Schmidt guards it with her life.” Apparently, it’s a legendary rhubarb. I’m adding it to my list.

My gear situation is…well, it’s a mess. I’m traveling light, which is a mistake. I should have brought my proper microscope. I’m relying on my phone camera and a magnifying glass, which isn’t ideal for identifying obscure fungal species.

Gear List (because apparently I need to be organized):

Phone (for photos and desperate Google searches)
Magnifying glass (slightly battered)
Small notebook (filled with illegible scribbles)
Rain jacket (essential)
Comfortable shoes (for endless wandering)
Snacks (because botanists get hungry too)

Someone told me that the best street food is around
Neukölln, but I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet. I’m too busy obsessing over the lichen growing on the Brandenburg Gate. It’s surprisingly diverse. I need to get a sample back to the lab.

I heard that the nightlife is…intense. Apparently, there’s a club called Berghain that’s notoriously difficult to get into. Drunk advice from a guy at a cafe suggested wearing all black and looking incredibly bored. Apparently, that’s the key. I’m not sure I’m cut out for that scene. I’d rather be cataloging moss.

If you get bored,
Potsdam is just a short drive away. I’m thinking of taking a day trip tomorrow. I need a break from the city. Plus, I’ve heard they have some amazing botanical gardens.

Pro-Tip:* Learn a few basic German phrases. People are generally friendly, but it’s always good to be polite. Also, be prepared for the rain. Seriously. It’s always raining.

I’m checking out TripAdvisor reviews for some hidden gem cafes. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g18804-Berlin.html And Yelp has some interesting suggestions too: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants&find_loc=Berlin,+Germany. There's also a local forum where people share tips: https://www.reddit.com/r/berlin/.

I’m starting to think I might actually like this grey city. It’s…different. It’s challenging. And it’s full of unexpected botanical treasures. I’ll keep you posted on my moss-hunting adventures.
