Austin, Texas: A Few Thoughts After the Numbers

@Lucas Grant3/5/2026blog

okay, so i just got back from austin. not sure what the heck that string of numbers - 3619194 and 1558801854 - meant, but it definitely added some… something to the vibe. the weather? i just checked and it's... there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. pretty humid, definitely feeling the stickiness. a little over 73%, which is basically a sauna. but hey, at least the air smells like barbecue and sunscreen.

i was wandering around south congress avenue - which, by the way, is just packed with people. everyone’s got music spilling out of every doorway, and the smell of tacos is a constant companion. it’s the kind of place where you can get completely lost for hours and not even notice. i spent most of my time just people-watching and trying not to spill my cold brew.

i heard that the food truck scene here is insane. i’m not even kidding. someone told me that the Korean BBQ tacos are a must-try, but be prepared for a wait. and the breakfast tacos? don’t even get me started. i swear, i could live on breakfast tacos. seriously.

i almost went to the bats at the Congress Avenue Bridge, but then i remembered i had a deadline looming. maybe next time. i heard that it's a truly unforgettable experience. and the city itself is just… energetic. it's like a constant hum of activity, a mix of music, food, and weirdness.

Someone I talked to at the Zilker Park picnic area said: "Don't even think about getting a parking spot downtown on a Saturday. It's a losing battle. You gotta go early or be prepared to walk."

i spent a lot of time just soaking it all in. the weird art galleries, the dive bars with the regulars who know everyone’s name, the outdoor concerts that go on until the early hours of the morning. it’s a city that embraces its weirdness, and it’s infectious.

*Pro-Tip: if you’re looking for a quiet escape from the city buzz, head to Zilker Park. it's a huge green space with tons of activities, and it's a great place to relax and recharge. and if you want a good view, go to Mount Bonnell! Local Advice*: if you get bored, San Antonio is just a short drive away. You can explore the Alamo and all the cool things that San Antonio has to offer.

reviews were… interesting. someone warned me about the aggressive tourists in the tourist traps near the State Capitol. another person said that the hiking trails around the city are surprisingly good, even if they can be a little crowded. it seems like everyone has an opinion on what to see and do in Austin.

seriously, i’m already planning my return trip. i need more tacos. i need more music. i need to get lost again.

TripAdvisor for recommendations, and check out Yelp for restaurant reviews. Austin's official tourism website has a ton of info too.
