Athens? More Like a Groggy Attempt to Find Myself in 256614
woke up at 3 am with a spreadsheet of coordinates and a coffee that tasted like regret. the city outside mywindow looked like a mix between a playground for pigeons and a scene from a movie that never got made. somehow, i ended up here-adventuring in athens with a backpack full of old socks and a desire to ask strangers about their lives.
weather here is doing that thing where itās 8.93 degrees on the thermometer but feels like youāre being hugged by a very confused refrigerator. i just checked and itās...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the wind is whispering in ancient Greek and the umbrellas on the street look like they belong in a different decade.
so, neighbors. if you get bored, the islands are just a short drive away. iām talking blue domes and fewer people than a yoga class in a library. one old guy told me last night that the sea here is āaliveā because it refuses to freeze. donāt ask me what that means. probably a myth.
someone told me that the tap water in athens is āso bad it could power a washing machine.ā another said the best pizza is at a spot called ālapithosā but the reviews are all over the place. i heard that the place smells like cinnamon and regret, but who knows?
at one point, i tried to find a wi-fi hotspot near the acropolis but ended up in a maze of alleys. a street artist offered to draw me a map on his wall in exchange for a faulty receipt. we both laughed until the receipt broke.
for real advice, check: tripadvisor-athens-locals for what not to do, or yelp-lapithos if youāre desperate for a pizza date. thereās also a local board at athens-travel-forums where people post weird stuff like āi saw a ghost near the old libraryā or āmy dog started singing to me last week.ā take it with a grain of salt.
i took a million photos. one of a cat ignoring me, another of a street sign in bad broken english. unsplash gave me shots of the city that look like theyāre from a different year. here and here and here if you want to pretend youāre also lost.
tl;dr: athens is a city thatāll confuse you, charm you, and leave you with more questions than answers. bring a map, a skeptic, and maybe a blanket.
p.s. heards that the best way to blend in is to ask people about the weather. everyoneļ¼s opinion is different. heated debate about whether 8.93 is too cold or just ā_okay.ā
