Wandering Through the Weird, Wonderful Corners of Bhopal
okay, so i’m sitting here in bhopal, and i can’t stop thinking about how this city feels like it’s stuck between two eras-one foot in crumbling colonial buildings, the other in buzzing chai stalls. i just checked and it’s 25.3°c there right now, so if you’re into that kind of dry, slightly breezy heat, you’re in luck. humidity’s at 34%, which means you won’t feel like you’re swimming through the air-just a gentle reminder that india’s summer is still very much a thing.
i heard from a rickshaw driver (who may or may not have been slightly tipsy) that the best biryani in town is at a place called *Jameel Hotel on Itwara Road. he said, “you’ll smell it before you see it”-and honestly, he wasn’t wrong. it’s tucked between a hardware store and a saree shop, and the smell hits you like a warm hug. someone told me that the owner’s been using the same recipe since 1978, which sounds like the kind of rumor that’s probably true in bhopal.
if you get bored, indore and ujjain are just a short drive away, and they’ve got their own weird charms-indore’s street food scene is legendary, and ujjain’s temples are the kind of peaceful that makes you forget your phone exists for a bit.
anyway, here’s a little map so you don’t get totally lost:
and because i can’t help myself, here are a few shots i found that actually feel like bhopal-dusty, dreamy, and full of life:
if you’re into offbeat history, the Bhimbetka rock shelters are only an hour away-prehistoric cave paintings that look like they were done by stoned aliens. and if you’re more of a “let’s eat until we hate ourselves” traveler, Chatori Gali is where you need to be at sunset. i heard from a local that the best time to visit is just before the power cuts hit-something about the candlelight making the food taste better.
oh, and don’t skip the Taj-ul-Masajid* mosque if you’re around-it’s one of the biggest in india, and the courtyard is so vast it feels like you’ve stepped into another century. someone warned me that the guards there are strict about timings, so maybe check before you wander in wearing your most questionable outfit.
anyway, that’s my messy take on bhopal. it’s not the kind of city that screams for attention, but if you slow down, it’ll tell you stories you won’t hear anywhere else.
