Valencia, Spain: Numbers, Humidity, and a Whole Lotta Sun

@Freya Holm3/4/2026blog

ok, so. valencia. i landed here after, like, a million connections and a questionable airport sandwich. i’m still processing everything. the numbers: 3588255… what does that even mean? and then 1320223386? feels like a secret code someone scribbled on a napkin. honestly, i have no idea, but it's kinda cool, right?

The weather? okay, it's...there right now. hope you like that kind of thing. temp 10.52°C, feels like 9.79°C. not freezing, but definitely a ‘grab a jacket’ kinda day. humidity is a solid 83%, which is a bit much. like being wrapped in a warm, damp hug. i just checked, and it's hovering around 1020 pressure, with the sea level being 1020 too - a bit bizarre. *Grnd_level is a comfortable 756.

first impressions? the air smells like salt and oranges. seriously. like, everywhere. i’ve already wandered aimlessly for hours, and i’m pretty sure i’m hopelessly lost, but it's not a bad kind of lost. the architecture is wild - a mix of old and new, all sun-bleached and gorgeous. i’ve been bouncing between the old town and the modernista district, basically just soaking it all in.

Neighborhoods here are a maze. if you get bored, Madrid is just a short drive away. I heard that the beach is amazing, but i’m prioritizing coffee right now. i found a tiny little cafe tucked away down a side street - seriously, it was so charming, i almost didn’t want to leave. spilled some of my coffee on my notebook. standard.

I’m trying to avoid the tourist traps, but it’s proving difficult. i’m following a slightly dodgy recommendation from a guy i met at the hostel. he swore by a little tapas bar down by the harbor.

Something a local warned me about: “Don’t trust anyone who offers you free paella.” Apparently, it’s a trap.

my plan is pretty simple: wander, eat, drink coffee, and try not to get completely disoriented. but honestly, the best part about travel is the unexpected detours, right? i’m thinking of checking out the Central Market tomorrow - supposedly it's a sensory overload.

gear list - because, let’s be real, i always need a list:
comfortable shoes (essential!)
sunscreen (duh)
a reusable water bottle (stay hydrated!)
a good book (for those moments of peaceful wandering)
a portable charger (because battery anxiety is real)
a phrasebook (even if all i learn is ‘thank you’)
a journal (to document all the chaos)

someone told me that the Turia Gardens are fantastic for cycling - but i’m not quite up for that level of exertion yet. i'm embracing the slow-paced vibe. i’m pretty sure i’m going to end up spending most of my time just people-watching and consuming copious amounts of churros.

looking for a good place for some authentic paella? check out TripAdvisor for some reviews, but take them with a grain of salt.

hope to post again soon. maybe with a slightly less confused update. i also saw a street artist working near the cathedral - really cool stuff. you can check out more street art inspiration on Street Art Cities. and if you're into history, Valencia Tourist Board has tons of info about the city's past. maybe you can find some inspiration while you're planning your trip. i'm off to find that market... wish me luck.
