Sacramento's Got a Weird Vibe, Y'all (and I'm Kinda Here For It)

okay, so. sacramento. i didn’t plan to be here. touring with the band kinda…shifted things. we were supposed to be in portland, but a busted van and a very persuasive booking agent landed me in northern california for a few days. and honestly? it’s…interesting.

i just checked and it’s…a damp chill right now. like, the kind where your fingers get that weird tingle and you question all your life choices. the weather app says it’s 11.01 degrees, feels like 10.12, and the pressure is high - 1026, apparently. humidity’s a hefty 75%, which explains the dampness. i’m not a meteorologist, okay? just reporting facts.

so, the vibe. it’s…suburban. but not in a boring way. it’s like, a really dedicated suburban vibe. everyone’s got perfectly manicured lawns and a slightly unsettling amount of outdoor lighting. i wandered around *midtown for a bit, and it’s got this weird mix of historic buildings and…well, strip malls. it’s a lot.

“Don’t go near the R Street corridor after dark,” someone mumbled to me at a coffee shop. “Heard it gets…interesting. Lots of folks just…hanging around.”

I’m staying near
Old Sacramento, which is…a tourist trap, let’s be honest. But it’s got character. Like, a really aggressively preserved character. It feels like a movie set, but a movie set where they’re trying really hard to convince you it’s real. I checked out some reviews on TripAdvisor - mostly families complaining about the heat and the lack of parking. Classic.

if you get bored,
Roseville and Elk Grove are just a short drive away. i haven’t ventured out that far yet, but i’m told they’re…more of the same, just with slightly different landscaping.

okay, gear list time. because, you know, drummer stuff.

My snare drum (obviously) - gotta have that crisp crack.
A ridiculously oversized hoodie - essential for battling the damp chill.
Noise-canceling headphones - the world is loud enough already.
A portable espresso maker - because i refuse to drink bad coffee.
A notebook and pen - gotta jot down these weird observations.

“The Capitol building is haunted,” a very enthusiastic local told me while i was waiting for a bus. “Apparently, a former governor still roams the halls.”

I spent a couple of hours wandering around the *California State Capitol Museum. it’s actually pretty impressive, even if i’m not a huge history buff. i overheard some drunk advice at a bar about checking out the Crocker Art Museum - apparently, they have a decent collection of California art. i might do that tomorrow. i also saw a listing on Yelp for a really good-looking taco place called Taco Bell Cantina - that’s definitely on the agenda. https://www.yelp.com/biz/taco-bell-cantina-sacramento

Someone told me that the
American River Parkway is amazing for biking. i’m tempted to rent one, but the dampness is really putting me off. i’m also considering checking out the Sacramento History Museum. https://www.sachistorymuseum.org/

pro-tips for surviving sacramento:

Embrace the suburban weirdness. it’s part of the charm (sort of).
Wear layers. the weather is unpredictable.
Find good coffee. seriously.
Don’t trust everything you hear from enthusiastic locals.
check out the local events listings. https://www.visit-sacramento.com/events/

overall? sacramento isn’t exactly blowing my mind. but it’s…present. it’s got a certain…energy. a slightly confused, slightly damp energy. and i’m strangely okay with that. i’ll probably be gone in a few days, but for now, i’m just gonna wander around, drink coffee, and try not to get too damp.

and maybe avoid the R Street corridor after dark. just in case.
