Reykjavik Rhapsody: Lost in the Land of Fire and Ice
okay, so like, i landed in *Reykjavik yesterday. and the numbers… 5861897 and 1840023463. weird, right? no idea what they mean. maybe it's some sort of Icelandic internet code? honestly, who knows. i just checked and it's…bone-chillingly cold there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. like, minus 30.99 degrees celsius? feels like it too. the wind is doing this whole whistling thing, you know? like the city itself is trying to tell you a secret.
i'm a freelance photographer, so naturally, i'm trying to capture all this… stark beauty. the landscape is just… otherworldly. think endless fields of black lava rock meeting snow-dusted mountains. it's like someone spilled charcoal and powdered sugar all over the place. i’m already planning a trip to the Blue Lagoon - everyone says it’s worth the hype (saw some seriously good shots on their Instagram, @bluelagoon). Apparently, it's the perfect way to combat the arctic vibes. i heard that the water is rich in minerals and does wonders for your skin. or maybe that’s just what someone at the airport told me to get me to go. you know how it is.
the locals are… interesting. very reserved, but also incredibly friendly once you break the ice (pun intended, i guess). i was at this little cafe near Hallgrímskirkja (totally worth the climb for the view) and overheard some interesting gossip.
>“Don’t trust the puffins. They’re watching.”
seriously. someone said that. i don’t even know what that means. maybe it’s an old Icelandic superstition? it added to the whole mysterious atmosphere, though. i tried to ask the barista about it, but she just smiled and said, “they’re just being puffins.” cryptic, right?
i’m staying in a little guesthouse downtown. it’s super cozy, but also a little… creaky. the walls seem to have seen a few things. someone told me that the old houses in Reykjavik have a lot of history, and some even say they're haunted. i’m not really a ghost hunter, but the thought is kind of cool. there’s a cool little vintage shop on Laugavegur street - i might have to check that out later. i’m always on the lookout for unique finds.
the weather here is… unpredictable, to say the least. one minute it’s snowing, the next it’s a hazy grey. it’s definitely not a place for flip-flops. i’m thankful i packed layers. i'm thinking of venturing out to see the Northern Lights if the forecast is right. apparently, the end of the month is a good time to catch them. i saw some stunning photos online - just swirling green and purple across the sky.
Food-wise, i’ve been trying to embrace the local cuisine. had some amazing lamb soup yesterday - seriously, so good. someone at the hostel mentioned that you have to try the pylsur (Icelandic hot dog). apparently, it's a national obsession. i’m keeping that in mind for tomorrow. i might also check out a restaurant on Yelp - there are a few highly rated places around. i’m not much of a coffee snob, but i did indulge in a latte this morning. needed the caffeine boost.
if you get bored, copenhagen* is just a short drive away. i’m considering a day trip. the thought of exploring another cool city is pretty appealing. i’m trying to soak it all in, this raw, almost alien landscape. it’s definitely a place that gets under your skin. i’ll keep you posted on my adventures. and maybe, just maybe, i’ll figure out what those numbers mean. seriously, send help (and maybe a translation app). you can find some cool photography tours here: https://www.viator.com/Reykjavik-tours/Photography/d339-g1. don’t forget to check out some local events on https://www.eventbrite.com/d/iceland--reykjavik/. and if you're looking for accommodations, TripAdvisor has a ton of options.
