newcastle's brews & blues: a caffeine-fueled winter shuffle

a boardwalk with a ferris wheel in the background

just landed in newcastle and the weather’s doing that thing where it slaps you with damp cold that seeps into your bones. i just checked and it’s currently giving off major arctic vibes, hope you packed your thermals. feels like 1.5 degrees out here but the humidity’s 82% so it’s that sneaky kind of cold where your fingers go numb before you even realize it. locals are looking at me like i’m crazy for not wearing three coats - *tyne river winds don’t play games.

my mission? caffeine crawling through this city’s veins. first stop: some hole-in-the-wall recommended by tripadvisor’s hidden gems list. barista gives side-eye when i ask about single-origin beans, but the flat white saves him. almost good enough to forget the
grey skies pressing down on everything.

heard from this drunk guy at the next table that ‘old code coffee’ roasts their own beans and the flat white’s to die for, but he also said they’ve got a queue out the door and only take cash. so i skipped it.

then wandered over to yelp’s top-rated spots and found this place with exposed brick and vinyl records. decent espresso, but the heater’s broken so everyone’s huddled like penguins. if you get stir-crazy, durham and middlesbrough are basically your next-door neighbors - just hop in the car when the rain gets too much.

someone warned me that the cathedral’s beautiful but they charge you ten quid to see it. said it’s cheaper to just stand outside and admire the architecture.

found this little aussie-run spot near the quayside.
stovetop espresso machine, real ceramic cups, barista who actually knows his stuff. coffee was life-changing. place was tiny though - by the time i finished, three more people were waiting at the door.

black labrador retriever on water during daytime

saw this labrador just chilling by the river, looking way more comfortable than i felt. probably had better coffee too. tried the market next for hot chocolate - decent but nothing special. then spotted these swan boats on the dark water. looked cute but the lake looked like it’d swallow you whole.

Four swan boats docked on a dark lake

these boats were docked for good reason - weather’s turning sour. ended up at newcastlegateshead’s food page to find shelter. city’s got layers though - beneath the
industrial chill*, there’s warmth in the coffee shops and the stubbornly cheerful locals. just gotta know where to look. p.s. if you find ‘old code coffee’, let me know if it’s worth hypothermia.
