Munich: Lost My Drumsticks (and Found Some Schnitzel)
okay, so munich. it’s…a lot. i’m liam, by the way, touring drummer. currently between gigs, which mostly means desperately trying to find a laundromat that doesn’t judge my sock collection.
this trip was supposed to be about recharging, maybe finding some weird vintage drum kits. it’s mostly been about navigating the public transport system and realizing i severely underestimated the german love of rules. seriously, the pedestrian crossings are intense. i swear one glared at me for jaywalking.
i just checked and it’s…a bit drizzly right now, with a definite chill. the weather report said 7.36 degrees celsius, but it feels like 6.59, which, honestly, is a mood. the air pressure is 1022, humidity’s at 61%, and the sea level is 1022, but honestly, i’m more concerned about finding a decent coffee. i’ve been relying on this little place near marienplatz - Backstube - their pretzels are a lifesaver.
someone told me that the english garden is where all the real munich residents hang out. apparently, it’s a whole vibe, with beer gardens and naked sunbathers. i haven’t braved it yet, but i’m considering it for research purposes, obviously.
my airbnb is…interesting. the walls are paper thin, and my neighbor, herr schmidt, seems to be practicing the tuba at all hours. if you get restless, *salzburg and vienna are just a quick train ride away. i’ve been looking at day trips, maybe even heading to Neuschwanstein Castle. it looks straight out of a fairytale.
gear-wise, i’m traveling light(ish). here’s the breakdown:
*Drumsticks: (currently missing, send help!) - i think i left them at a bar after a jam session. rookie mistake.
*Noise-canceling headphones: essential for surviving tuba practice and airplane journeys. Sony WH-1000XM5 are my go-to.
*Portable charger: because nothing is more tragic than a dead phone when you’re lost in a new city.
*Universal adapter: duh.
*A surprisingly large collection of band t-shirts:* it’s a problem, i admit.
I heard that Augustiner-Keller is the place to go for proper beer and food. Apparently, it’s a bit touristy, but the beer garden is massive and the atmosphere is great. Someone else warned me about the Hofbräuhaus - said it’s basically a stag party central. i’m leaning towards avoiding that one. you can find more local recommendations on Reddit's Munich forum.
last night, i stumbled into this tiny jazz club - Jazzbar Vogler - and it was amazing. the music was incredible, the beer was flowing, and i almost didn’t lose my drumsticks. almost. i’m starting to think munich is growing on me, even with the judgmental pedestrian crossings and the tuba-playing neighbor. it’s a weird, wonderful, slightly intimidating place. and the schnitzel? don’t even get me started. it’s a whole other level. i’m off to find more. wish me luck (and maybe send drumsticks).
