miami mornings and the humidity that doesn't quit
okay so miami is like this wild fever dream where the palm trees are taller than your apartment building and the ocean looks like someone spilled glitter into it. i landed here thinking i'd get some chill beach time, but instead i'm sweating through my shirt before i even find a decent coffee shop. the weather? yeah, it's hot. like, 28.66°C hot, feels like someone cranked the thermostat to 31.35°C and forgot to tell you. humidity's sitting at 66%, which basically means my hair's auditioning for a lion king reboot every morning. if you're into that sticky, salty-air kinda vibe, you're gonna love it here.
anyway, i stayed in this little spot near little havana, and lemme tell you, the neighborhood's alive 24/7. you can't walk two blocks without hearing salsa spilling outta open windows or someone grilling something that smells like heaven. someone told me the cuban coffee at ventanita is mandatory, so i went. it's basically rocket fuel in a thimble, and i'm not mad about it.
"don't even think about skipping the key lime pie at fireman derek's,"
a local slurred at me in a bar. so i didn't. it was tangy, sweet, and probably the reason i had to buy bigger shorts by the end of the week.
if you get bored, ft. lauderdale and miami beach are just a short drive away, but honestly, miami's got enough chaos to keep you busy for days. i wandered into wynwood walls thinking i'd be in and out in 30 minutes. three hours later, i was still staring at murals that made my brain feel like it had just watched a foreign film without subtitles.
food-wise, i hit up a spot called versailles because i heard it's where the cuban sandwich was basically born. it's loud, it's crowded, and the sandwich is bigger than my face. worth it. also, art basel is apparently a whole thing here if you time it right, but even if you don't, the galleries are always buzzing.
"you haven't lived until you've had a cafecito at 2am while watching abuela argue with the cashier,"
a drunk guy in a guayabera told me. i don't know who abuela is, but i believe him.
i also checked out the everglades for a day because someone said it'd be "a vibe." it was. alligators, mangroves, and airboats that sound like harley davidsons. i kept expecting a dinosaur to pop out, but no luck.
and yeah, the nightlife here is something else. i ended up in a rooftop bar in brickell, staring at the skyline while a DJ played something that sounded like a fever dream. someone kept offering me mojitos, and i kept saying yes. no regrets.
if you're planning a trip, just know that miami doesn't really do "off-season." it's always buzzing, always loud, and always a little bit sticky. but that's the charm, right? you either love it or you're lying.
