Marrakech Mayhem: 3569370 & Some Seriously Strange Vibes
okay, so. marrakech. where do i even begin? i'm pretty sure the numbers 3569370 and 1192000780 popped into my head right as i stepped off the plane - didn’t ask, didn’t question, just…there. weird, right? feels like the city itself is trying to communicate in some ancient code.
The air here? thick. like a spiced stew simmering on low, constantly. the humidity is clinging to you like a second skin, even though the temp is a surprisingly pleasant 26.17°C. feels like it’s 26.17°C too. a little unsettling. the pressure's at 1017, humidity’s a solid 73%, you know, the usual desert drama. it's a sensory overload in the best (and sometimes slightly terrifying) way possible. i just checked and it's... breezy? there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
I'm staying in a little riad in the medina - totally charming, but navigating the alleyways is a full-time job. seriously, it’s a labyrinth designed to swallow your sense of direction. and the smells! oh god, the smells. mint tea, spices, something vaguely animalistic…it’s all just…a lot.
I heard that the souks are a prime spot for getting totally ripped off, so i'm trying to play it cool. bartering is an art form here, i guess. i scored a beautiful leather bag after a very intense negotiation - let's just say i think the vendor might be plotting my demise.
Speaking of intense, the locals are…intense. not in a bad way, just…present. direct. you're constantly being watched, assessed. a woman selling dates tried to sell me a magic amulet that would 'bring good fortune' - i politely declined. i’m good with my own luck, thanks. something a local warned me about was trusting anyone offering unsolicited help; apparently, it’s often a prelude to a sales pitch (or worse).
I spent yesterday wandering around the Jardin Majorelle - seriously stunning. the cobalt blue buildings are breathtaking! it’s a much-needed oasis of calm amidst the chaos. also saw some crazy pigeons. they're like, the size of small chickens.
Food-wise? a rollercoaster. i had tagine that was so good it brought me to tears. then i had something…questionable…from a street vendor that i'm still trying to forget. maybe stick to the restaurants recommended on TripAdvisor? TripAdvisor Marrakech Restaurants , just saying.
And the noise! Constant chatter, the calls of vendors, the rhythmic sounds of music… it never stops. Someone told me that if you get bored, Essaouira is just a short drive away. I’m thinking of heading there for a day trip.
One thing that really struck me is the color. everywhere you look, there's a riot of color - the buildings, the textiles, the spices…it’s almost overwhelming, but in a good way. i'm trying to capture it all with my camera, but it’s proving…challenging. i also hear that the spice markets are a real treat for the senses-- something a local mentioned was, “bring a good nose and an empty bag.”
The sunsets here are unreal. deep oranges and purples painting the sky. makes all the chaos worthwhile, i suppose. for now, i'm off to get lost again. wish me luck.
Oh! and quick tip: learn a few basic Arabic phrases. it goes a long way. You can find some resources on Duolingo. And definitely check out Yelp for restaurant reviews - but take them with a grain of salt!
Consider bringing a good pair of walking shoes, you'll be doing a LOT of walking. And maybe an earplug or two. Just kidding... mostly. I’m also looking into finding some local artisan workshops, there’s a great site for finding them ArtisanDirect. It’s got a wealth of cultural experiences. I'm hoping to find something to help unlock the meaning behind the numbers 3569370 and 1192000780. Who knows?
