Manila Mayhem: Humidity, Halo-Halo, and a Whole Lotta Hustle
okay, so. manila. wow. just…wow. i’m still peeling off layers of something that feels like a permanent sheen of…well, everything. i just checked and it’s clinging to you like a lovesick gecko right now, hope you like that kind of thing. twenty-six point something degrees, feels like twenty-six point three. not complaining, exactly. i’m a touring drummer, you know? i’ve played in sweatboxes hotter than this. but this is…different. it’s a vibe. a humid, chaotic, beautiful vibe.
I was here scouting for a gig, honestly. Some band needs a last-minute replacement, and my agent, bless his frantic little heart, sent me packing. didn’t really have time to plan anything, which is probably why I’m currently covered in what I suspect is a combination of exhaust fumes and mango juice.
First thing’s first: the traffic. oh, the traffic. it’s…an experience. I swear, the jeepneys are sentient beings, weaving through the chaos with a grace that defies physics. I took a Grab (the local Uber) from the airport to my…well, let’s call it a “budget-friendly accommodation” in Malate. It took nearly two hours. Two hours! I could have walked, probably. I saw a few people doing just that, looking remarkably unfazed.
Speaking of Malate, it’s…interesting. Lots of bars, karaoke joints, and street food vendors. I overheard someone - looked like a retired sailor, judging by the parrot tattoo - saying, “Don’t eat the street adobo after midnight. Trust me.” Drunk advice, maybe, but I’m taking it to heart. I did try the halo-halo though. That was a win. Shaved ice, sweet beans, ube jam…pure sugary bliss. Found a decent spot on TripAdvisor - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g298460-Malate_Manila-Restaurants.html. Worth checking out if you’re in the area.
I spent a day wandering around Intramuros, the old walled city. It’s surprisingly peaceful, a little oasis of history amidst the urban sprawl. The San Agustin Church is stunning - seriously, go see it. Someone told me that the Spanish built it to impress the locals, and I can see why. It’s a serious flex. I found a little cafe there, too, with decent coffee. Yelp had some good reviews - https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=coffee&find_loc=Intramuros,+Manila.
“They say the ghosts of Spanish soldiers still patrol the walls at night. Don’t look them in the eye.”
I’m not usually one for ghost stories, but…the atmosphere in Intramuros is definitely…heavy. I checked out some local forums - https://www.istorya.net/forums/ - and apparently, there are tons of tales about unexplained sightings and eerie noises. Maybe I’ll pack a sage stick.
If you get bored, Tagaytay is just a short drive away. Apparently, you can see Taal Volcano from there. I haven’t made it yet, but it’s on the list. I’m also trying to find some decent vintage shops. I’m a sucker for a good find. I saw a post on a local Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/manilavintageshops/ - about a place in Quiapo that’s supposed to be a goldmine. Wish me luck.
Honestly, Manila is…a lot. It’s overwhelming, chaotic, and occasionally terrifying. But it’s also vibrant, resilient, and full of life. I’m exhausted, I’m sweating, and I’m pretty sure I’ve developed a permanent twitch in my left eye. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Just…bring a fan. And maybe some industrial-strength deodorant.
