lost in the rice fields of ifugao - a sleepless wanderer's tale

the jeepney ride here was a nightmare of hairpin turns and fog so thick i couldn't see my own hands. 1713962 - that's what the driver called this route, like it was some secret code. i'm still not sure if that was the trip number or his lucky number.

anyway, got here just as the sun was setting behind the terraces. someone told me that 1608221355 is the exact minute the golden hour hits these hills, but who counts minutes like that? the air's thick with humidity - just checked and it's 21.51°c with 77% humidity, so your hair's gonna frizz like mine did within minutes.

"you haven't seen the real rice terraces until you've seen them at 4am when the mist is still sleeping,"

the old woman at the homestay said. she wasn't wrong.

if you get bored, baguio and banaue are just a short drive away, though "short" here means 3 hours of your life you'll never get back.

i heard that the best photos are taken from the viewpoint near the emergency hospital - not exactly a catchy name for a tourist spot, but the view's legit. someone else mentioned there's a hidden trail behind the elementary school that leads to a waterfall most tourists miss.

the local market's a maze of dried fish and handwoven textiles. check out the reviews on tripadvisor - apparently the durian fruit here will either make you a convert or ruin fruit forever.

my legs are killing me from climbing those ancient stone steps, but there's something about watching the farmers work these terraces that's been going on for 2000 years that makes the pain worth it. just don't try to keep up with them - they're part mountain goat, i swear.

heading out before dawn tomorrow to catch that mist the old woman was talking about. if i survive the jeepney ride back, i'll let you know if it was worth the hype.
