Lost in Lisbon: A Whirlwind of Tiles, Tempers, and… Numbers?

@Topiclo Admin3/18/2026blog

okay, so...lisbon. i landed here yesterday, and honestly, it’s been a bit of a blur. i keep seeing these numbers everywhere - 2502958 and 1012006499. no idea what they mean, but they’re stuck in my head. maybe it’s a secret code? or just some random identifier. the weather? i just checked and it's... surprisingly mild for late October, hope you like that kind of thing. the air smells like salt and something vaguely floral, maybe jasmine? it’s all a bit overwhelming, but in a good way.

i’m staying in the *Alfama district, which is… intense. think narrow, winding streets, laundry hanging overhead, and the constant strumming of fado music drifting from open doorways. it’s beautiful, but you definitely have to watch where you’re going. i swear i walked into a stack of ceramic tiles yesterday. ouch. i’ve been trying to navigate using Google Maps, but the streets here seem to defy all logic. it's like a puzzle designed by a mischievous god.

Lisbon street

i spent most of today just wandering, getting gloriously lost. i stumbled upon a tiny little bakery that served the
best pastéis de nata i’ve ever tasted. seriously, life-changing. and i think i accidentally joined a spontaneous street party. people were singing and dancing and generally having a wonderful time. i don’t speak much Portuguese, so i mostly just smiled and nodded and tried to look like i knew what was going on.

i heard that the
Time Out Market Lisboa is a good place to grab a bite, but someone told me that the queues are insane. apparently, you can wait an hour just to get a plate of food. i’m not sure if i’m brave enough for that kind of commitment. i did see a sign for a walking tour that focuses on the city’s history. it looked interesting, but i'm kind of enjoying the aimless wandering at the moment.

Lisbon buildings

speaking of history, i visited
São Jorge Castle which has incredible views of the city. it's seriously worth the climb! but be warned - it’s steep. and there are a lot of steps. my legs are burning. it’s the kind of place where you can just stand and soak it all in, imagining all the stories these walls could tell.

“Someone told me the best way to experience Lisbon is to just get lost. Apparently, you’ll find all sorts of hidden gems that you wouldn’t find otherwise.”

the locals seem… reserved, but friendly enough. if you get bored, Sintra is just a short train ride away, apparently. i'm thinking of checking that out tomorrow. someone else mentioned that the trams can be really crowded, especially during peak hours, so i’m trying to avoid them. i’m also a bit wary of pickpockets, so i’m keeping my belongings close.

i saw a street artist working on a mural near the
LX Factory. the color and the energy! it was awesome. these random numbers kept popping up on shop signs and even on building facades.

Lisbon tiles

i’m not sure what the deal with those numbers is, but i suspect they might be connected to some kind of local legend or historical event. maybe they’re dates? coordinates? encrypted messages? it’s all very mysterious and… well, that’s Lisbon for you, i guess. i’ll keep exploring and see if i can uncover any clues.

i think i saw a map of the
buses somewhere, but it looked complicated. i need to figure out how to get to the Belém Tower* tomorrow. it's supposed to be really impressive.

I heard that the food tour in the Bairro Alto is amazing but people warned me that the walk is long.

Anyway, gotta go. the sun is setting, and i want to find a cozy little spot for a glass of wine. wish me luck!
