Lost in 75337: A Drummer's Dizzying Detour Through Hadju
okay, so. hadju. where do i even begin? i was supposed to be in bucharest, you know, laying down some tracks for a really weird electronica project. but my agent, bless his chaotic heart, booked me a 'sound check' in⦠this. 75337. apparently, itās a district. a very⦠specific district.
I just checked and it's hovering around twenty-one degrees, feels like it too, which is⦠fine. not exactly the humid, sweaty vibe Iām used to for drumming, but Iāll take it. the air smells faintly of something sweet and dusty, like dried figs and old concrete. itās⦠interesting.
Iām a touring session drummer, right? Iāve played everywhere. Tokyo, Reykjavik, a surprisingly lively bowling alley in Des Moines. But this? This is different. Itās⦠layered. Like a really complex polyrhythm.
Iām staying in this tiny apartment - booked it through Airbnb, naturally. The landlord, a woman named Elena with a permanent look of mild exasperation, just handed me a key and mumbled something about āquiet hours.ā Apparently, drumming at 3 AM isnāt appreciated. Who knew? Iām trying to be respectful, but the urge to just let loose is intense.
I wandered around today. Itās⦠a lot. Buildings are a mix of crumbling communist-era blocks and these surprisingly ornate, older houses with wrought-iron balconies. Thereās a market nearby, overflowing with produce I canāt even name. I bought some weird, purple fruit that tasted vaguely like bubblegum and disappointment.
Someone told me that the best place for mititei (those grilled minced meat rolls, right?) is this little place called āLa Vasile.ā Apparently, you have to elbow your way to the front and be prepared to shout your order. Iāll try it tomorrow. Iām also checking out TripAdvisor for more intel.
I overheard some guys arguing outside a cafe - something about a football match and a stolen goat. It was⦠captivating. This place is alive.
āDonāt trust the pigeons,ā a drunk guy slurred at me outside a bar. āTheyāre spies. For the⦠the squirrels.ā
Right. Okay.
If you get bored, pitesti and targoviste are just a short drive away. I might check them out if this āsound checkā turns out to be a complete bust. Iām starting to suspect my agent just wanted to see if Iād show up in the middle of nowhere.
Iām trying to find some decent coffee. Yelp says this place is supposed to be good, but itās a bit of a trek. Iām also looking for a decent music store - my snare drum head is looking a little worse for wear.
Iām also checking out this local forum to see if anyone has any insider tips. Apparently, thereās a hidden courtyard with a really amazing view.
Pro-Tip: Learn a few basic Romanian phrases. People seem to appreciate the effort, even if you butcher the pronunciation. Seriously.
Gear List (because Iām a drummer, obviously):
Snare Drum (needs a new head)
Bass Drum Pedal
Cymbal Bag (slightly leaking)
Earplugs (essential)
Portable Metronome (my sanity)
Phrasebook (attempting to learn Romanian)
Another overheard rumor: Apparently, thereās a secret underground network of tunnels beneath the city. Used by⦠well, nobody seems to know. Probably squirrels, if that drunk guy is to be believed.
Iām going to try and find some live music tonight. Something⦠anything. This place is weird, but itās also⦠compelling. Iām not sure what Iām doing here, but Iām definitely not bored. Check out Bucharest Events for listings.
Wish me luck. And maybe send coffee.
