Los Angeles: Static & Sunshine (and a weird obsession with kombucha)
okay, so los angeles. it’s…a lot. i just landed back home, smelling faintly of exhaust and desperation, and honestly, i’m still processing. i was chasing a lead on a vintage synth - a Roland Juno-106, specifically - and ended up stumbling into a whole other kind of chaos.
first off, the weather. i just peeked at the forecast and it’s…doing a thing. like, perpetually 68 degrees and vaguely threatening to drizzle, but never actually does. it’s a commitment to mild discomfort, honestly. the humidity was sitting around 27%, which meant my hair was doing its best impression of a tumbleweed. the air pressure felt like someone was gently pressing on my chest, and the temperature hovered around 15 degrees celsius. not awful, but not exactly beach weather either.
finding the synth was a whole odyssey. it involved a guy named ‘Cosmic Carl’ who runs a shop out of his garage in Echo Park, and a series of increasingly cryptic text messages. the shop itself? imagine a hoarder’s dream, but with more synthesizers. seriously, it was piled to the ceiling with gear. i think i saw a theremin buried under a stack of broken drum machines.
but the people. oh, the people. my neighbors were…intense. everyone seems to be ‘manifesting their best life’ or starting a podcast. if you get restless, *Palm Springs is a quick drive away, apparently. i overheard someone at a coffee shop (there are approximately 7,000 coffee shops in LA, by the way) complaining about the traffic on the 405. they said it’s “a spiritual test.” i’m not sure i’m passing.
someone told me that you absolutely have* to try the vegan tacos on Sunset Boulevard, but only from the truck with the purple awning. apparently, the other trucks are “a betrayal of the taco spirit.”
and the kombucha. good lord, the kombucha. it’s everywhere. every cafe, every grocery store, every street corner. it’s like they’re trying to replace water with fermented tea. i heard a rumor that there’s a black market for rare kombucha flavors. i’m not even kidding.
my accommodation was…interesting. a tiny Airbnb in Silver Lake that smelled faintly of patchouli and regret. the host, a woman named Luna, kept talking about her aura. it was…a lot. you can find similar places on Airbnb. i also checked out TripAdvisor for other options, but honestly, Luna’s place was part of the experience.
a bartender at a dive bar in downtown warned me to avoid eye contact with anyone wearing sunglasses at night. “they’re hiding something,” he slurred. “always hiding something.”
so, did i get the synth? eventually, yes. cosmic carl was…a character. but it was worth it. it’s currently sitting in my studio, humming quietly, a little piece of LA chaos brought home with me. i’m still trying to figure out what i’m going to do with all this kombucha, though. maybe start my own black market? check out Yelp for local recommendations, but take everything with a grain of salt. and if you’re planning a trip, pack comfortable shoes, a strong stomach, and a healthy dose of skepticism. you’ll need it. also, maybe a gas mask for the kombucha fumes. Time Out Los Angeles has some good event listings, if you're into that sort of thing.
