Lisbon’s a Blur: Rain, Pastel Buildings, and a Whole Lotta Lost Socks
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’ve aged five years in the last 72 hours. i landed in lisbon yesterday, and honestly, it’s been a beautiful, chaotic mess. the temp’s stuck at 25.98 all day, feels like 25.98, temp_min 25.98, temp_max 25.98, pressure 1010, humidity 59, sea_level 1010, grnd_level 987. yeah, that’s… consistent. like a really stubborn playlist.
my flight was delayed, naturally. then my bag went missing. then i discovered i’d packed three different pairs of socks, and only one actually matches. it’s a vibe, you know? a very specific, slightly frantic vibe. i’m running on lukewarm coffee and the sheer terror of missing my next gig.
i spent the morning wandering around the *Alfama district, which is basically a giant, crumbling staircase to nowhere. seriously, you could lose a small child up there. i stumbled upon this tiny tasca - ‘O Velho Eurico’ - and the owner, a guy named Manuel, looked like he’d wrestled a bear and won. he poured me a ginjinha (cherry liqueur) and told me someone told him that the best views in the city are from the São Jorge Castle. someone told me that, too, actually. i’m starting to think everyone in this city is just repeating the same tired travel advice.
i tried to find a decent place to eat, and Yelp kept directing me to places that looked like they hadn’t been cleaned since the 80s. i ended up at a little spot near the Praça do Comércio - ‘Zé da Mouraria’ - and the seafood was actually pretty decent. i mean, it wasn’t Michelin-star material, but it was solid. i overheard a group of guys arguing about the best way to make caldo verde (kale soup). it was intense.
Someone told me that the best way to experience Lisbon is to get lost. Seriously, just wander. Don’t plan anything. You’ll find the best things that way. And maybe a matching sock.
i spent the afternoon trying to capture some decent photos for my Instagram. let’s be honest, my photography skills are… developing. i’m aiming for ‘atmospheric’ but mostly I’m getting ‘slightly blurry’. i did manage to snag a few shots of the Jerónimos Monastery, which is seriously impressive. it’s like a giant, ornate gingerbread house.
i’m seriously considering just buying a small apartment here and never leaving. the rain started about an hour ago - it’s just… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s a soft, persistent drizzle, the kind that makes everything look a little gray and melancholic. perfect for contemplating the meaning of life, or, you know, just trying to find a dry pair of socks.
i checked TripAdvisor and found this place called ‘Time Out Market Lisboa’ - apparently, it’s a food hall with everything from pastel de nata to gourmet burgers. i’m adding it to my list. i also found a local board with some recommendations for live music venues. i’m hoping to catch a fado performance tonight.
if you get bored, Porto is just a short drive away. and Seville, and Madrid… this city is a gateway to a whole lot of chaos. i’m starting to think i need a bigger suitcase. and maybe a therapist.
i heard that the best way to get around is by tram. apparently, they’re incredibly charming and slightly terrifying. i’m leaning towards terrifying.
i’m currently nursing a bica* (espresso) at a cafe called ‘A Brasileira’ - it’s supposedly where Fernando Pessoa used to hang out. i’m not sure if i’m feeling any poetic inspiration, but the coffee is good.
i’m going to try and catch a show at ‘Rock in Lisboa’ later. i’m hoping for something loud and energetic. i need it.
seriously, if you’re looking for a city that’s a little bit weird, a little bit beautiful, and a whole lot of exhausting, Lisbon is your place. just be prepared to lose a few socks along the way.
