Kyoto Chaos: Rain, Ramen, and Really Weird Vibes

@Topiclo Admin3/18/2026blog

okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm matcha. i landed in kyoto like, 72 hours ago and my brain feels like a broken synthesizer. 2111831… seriously, what even is that number? it just keeps popping into my head. and 1392003393? don’t ask. it’s probably a parking ticket.

the weather here is… interesting. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s this persistent, damp drizzle that clings to everything - your clothes, your camera, your soul, probably. the humidity is sitting at 68%, which is basically a sauna disguised as a historical district. the pressure is 1016, which feels… normal, i guess? it’s 15.5 to 17.14 outside, so it’s not exactly scorching, but it’s definitely not a beach day.

i spent yesterday wandering around gion, trying to spot a geisha. didn’t see one. just a lot of really polite salarymen and a guy selling hand-painted fans. someone told me that the best ramen is at Ichiran, but i ended up at this tiny place tucked away down a side street. it was… intense. like, the chef glared at me while he made my noodles. i think he judged my chopstick technique. it was good though, seriously good.

i’m staying in this little ryokan near *Higashiyama. it’s…rustic. let’s go with rustic. the tatami mats are a little prickly, and the futon smelled vaguely of mothballs, but the onsen is amazing. it’s like a giant, steaming bathtub of tranquility. i’ve been spending most of my evenings there, just soaking and contemplating the futility of existence. which, you know, is a pretty standard practice for me.

i overheard some drunk tourists at the bar last night - they were arguing about whether or not the bamboo forest was “actually green.” like, duh. it’s bamboo. it’s green. but they were really passionate about it. it was… entertaining.

Someone told me that the Nishiki Market is a must-see, but also that you should avoid the pickled octopus. Apparently, it’s a local delicacy, but it’s also… potent. I heard that. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

i’ve been trying to capture the vibe of kyoto with my camera, but it’s proving difficult. it’s not the flashy, Instagram-perfect kind of place. it’s more… subtle. like a worn-out vinyl record. you have to really listen to hear it. i’m mostly just taking pictures of moss and temples. and ramen. lots and lots of ramen.

i’m planning on checking out fushimi inari shrine tomorrow. apparently, it’s a bit of a hike, but the views are supposed to be incredible. i’m bringing my hiking boots and a whole lot of water. and maybe a small bottle of whiskey. you know, for medicinal purposes.

if you get bored,
Osaka is just a short drive away. or Nara - they’ve got deer that will eat out of your hand. it’s wild. i’m also thinking about heading to Kobe* for some beef. seriously, the beef. it’s legendary.

i’m trying to find a decent coffee shop, but it’s proving to be a challenge. most places just serve green tea. i need a double espresso, stat. i found one place that had a decent americano, but it was ridiculously expensive. like, $8 for a small cup. highway robbery, i tell you.

i’m starting to think i need a new job. or at least a new hobby. maybe competitive origami? i don’t know. i’m just… adrift. but hey, at least the rain is pretty.
