Kyiv's Concrete Heart: A Drummer's Dizzying Detour

okay, so. kyiv. i wasn’t supposed to be in kyiv. touring gigs fell through, the usual chaos, and my buddy dima, who i met playing a festival in berlin a few years back, offered me a couch and a chance to “experience something real.” experience something real, huh? that’s what i always tell myself when i’m sleeping on someone’s floor.

first thing you notice? the grey. it’s not depressing, not really. it’s… stoic. like the city’s seen some stuff. the buildings are brutalist, all sharp angles and concrete. it’s a drummer’s dream, honestly. so much rhythmic potential in the architecture. i spent a good hour just tapping out beats on a random wall near *Maidan Nezalezhnosti.

and the weather? i just checked and it’s… a damp chill clinging to everything. like a persistent shadow. 8.87 degrees celsius, feels like 6.63. perfect for brooding, i guess. i’m not a sunshine and beaches kind of guy anyway.

food. gotta talk about the food. i stumbled into this tiny place near
St. Sophia's Cathedral - seriously, look it up on TripAdvisor [https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g294470-d192423-Reviews-St_Sophia_Cathedral-Kyiv_Kiev_Region.html] - and had varenyky. like, real varenyky. not the frozen kind you get back home. these were handmade, filled with potato and cheese, and swimming in sour cream. i’m pretty sure i ate my weight in them.

“Don’t trust the pigeons,” a woman mumbled to me at the cafe. “They’re spies.”

right? spies? i mean, kyiv is… intense. there’s a palpable energy in the air. a sense of history, of resilience. i spent an afternoon wandering around
Pechersk Lavra, which is absolutely mind-blowing. The sheer scale of it… you can check out some photos and reviews on Yelp [https://www.yelp.com/biz/pechersk-lavra-kyiv].

I overheard some drunk guys arguing about the best place to get borscht. apparently, there’s a fierce rivalry between two restaurants on
Volodymyrska Street. someone told me that “the red one is better, but the green one has more soul.” i didn’t get it, but i filed it away. always good to have local intel.

if you get bored, chernihiv and poltava are just a short drive away. i didn’t make it out there this time, but dima promised to take me next week. he’s been showing me around, introducing me to his friends, and generally making me feel less like a random drummer crashing on his couch.

gear list, because why not?

My trusty tama starclassic maple drums (obviously)
Noise-canceling headphones - essential for sleeping on couches
A good book - “One Hundred Years of Solitude” - always a solid choice
A universal adapter - because outlets are the enemy
A phrasebook - “дякую” (thank you) goes a long way

pro-tip: learn a few basic ukrainian phrases. people appreciate the effort, even if you butcher the pronunciation. and be prepared for a lot of staring. i’m a pretty average-looking guy, but i seem to attract a lot of attention here.

I also found this forum with some local tips [https://kyiv.travel/news/10-things-to-do-in-kyiv/].

kyiv isn’t a postcard-perfect destination. it’s raw, it’s gritty, it’s complicated. but it’s also incredibly captivating. i’m not sure how long i’ll be here, but i’m definitely glad i made the detour. and i’m definitely going to need more varenyky.
