Kourou: Rocket Science, Swamp Vibes, and That Humid Hug
kourou, french guiana. yeah, i didn't know where it was either until my plane touched down and the humidity hit me like a wet blanket. 24°c, feels like 25°c, 100% humidity. basically, you're breathing water. but hey, that's the jungle for ya.
first thing i noticed? the space center. *guiana space center looms over the town like a sci-fi prop. i heard from a bartender at la cabane bar that if you time it right, you can watch a rocket launch from the beach. apparently it's a local ritual to bring rum and stare at the sky like kids on the 4th of july.
walking around, the streets are sleepy. stray dogs. shuttered shops. but then you hit place des palmiers and suddenly there's chatter, fruit vendors, and the smell of something frying that i couldn't quite identify. someone told me the best accras (saltfish fritters) are at a no-name stand near the post office. "don't ask for the menu," they said. "just point and pay 2€."
i rented a kayak from a guy named marcel who looked at me like i was insane for wanting to paddle in the heat. "you know there are caimans, right?" he said. i shrugged. worth it. the kaw swamp nearby is eerie and beautiful-trees growing out of black water, birds screaming like they're being murdered.
if you get bored, cayenne and sinnamary are just a short drive away. cayenne for the markets and colonial chaos, sinnamary for empty beaches and zero tourists. someone also mentioned iles du salut (devil's island), but said the boat ride is choppy enough to make you question all your life choices.
foodwise, don't miss chez marie for blaff (a fish stew that'll clear your sinuses). and yes, there's a creole bakery on every corner. try the tourteau* if you like coconut and sugar in unholy amounts.
random tip: bring a rain jacket. it won't rain all day, but when it does, it's like someone turned on a firehose. also, french is king here. brush up or prepare to mime a lot.
overall, kourou isn't trying to be pretty. it's raw, steamy, and oddly charming. like that friend who shows up late, smells like the beach, and still makes you laugh.
