Hervey Bay: Where the Light and the Mosquitoes Play
i landed in hervey bay with a camera bag heavier than my brain after a red-eye flight. the air here? it's that kind of thick, warm hug that makes you want to take off your socks and stand in the grass. just looked outside and it's... 22 degrees clinging to your skin like a jealous ex, so pack a hanky if you're into that kind of thing.
if you get restless, brisbane's just a three-hour spin away, but honestly? why leave? i've been chasing the light for weeks and this place is a dream for a photographer.
"overheard at the bakery: the secret spot for sunrise is the northern end of urangan pier. go early, like 5:30, before the tourists show up. and don’t forget to bring your own coffee, the kiosk doesn’t open till 7."
the local scene is buzzing with hidden gems. i spent yesterday at the fraser island terminal, snapping the ferries. there’s a raw, untamed beauty here that you can’t fake. check out the ferry schedules here if you plan on island hopping.
"a drunk guy at the backpacker hostel told me that the best fish and chips are from the van near the marina, but only after 7 pm. before that, they’re just reheating. also, he said to avoid the seagulls at all costs."
the pressure's low today, 1011 hpa, which apparently means the weather’s about to flip. locals say that’s when the real magic happens - the sky turns these wild shades of orange and purple. here’s what the weather is doing right now if you’re into that.
oh, and someone warned me about the ghost tours at the old wharf. haven’t tried it yet, but i heard the guide’s got stories that’ll make your camera shake. you can book a spot here if you’re brave enough.
"a cafe owner whispered that the best photo op is at low tide, when the sandbars reveal themselves. but you’ve got to be quick because the water comes back in like a thief in the night."
anyway, i’ve got to go. my camera’s battery is screaming and my stomach’s rumbling. there’s a decent pub near the marina that does a mean steak pie. catch you later.
