Dust & Static: Lost in the Heat of Kochi

@Topiclo Admin3/22/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm chai. i landed in kochi - kochi, kerala - like, three days ago and it’s already chewed me up and spat me out a little. the humidity is a thing. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 1010 pressure, 83% humidity, feels like 26.6. it’s clinging to everything. like a really insistent houseguest who only wants to talk about the weather.

seriously, this place is… intense. it’s not the postcard-perfect, ‘oh my god, look at the backwaters’ kind of intense. it’s more like a slow-burn, simmering kind of intense. like a really good curry that’s been letting all the flavors meld for hours. i’m staying in this tiny guesthouse near Fort Kochi - it’s basically a collection of mismatched tiles and a perpetually grumpy cat named Rajan. he judges my attempts at photography. constantly.

I spent yesterday wandering around the Chinese fishing nets. they’re massive, these giant woven nets that guys crank up and down to scoop up the fish. it’s a spectacle, honestly. i watched a bunch of guys doing it, yelling at each other in malayalam - i caught a few words like ‘kura’ (fish) and ‘pilla’ (man). someone told me that the best place to watch them at sunset is from the pier - apparently, the light hits them just right. i’ll check it out tomorrow, if i can find a place to sit that isn’t actively being swarmed by pigeons.

found a surprisingly decent thali place down a side street. it was chaotic, loud, and smelled faintly of turmeric and something vaguely resembling old socks. but the food? legit. i’m talking mountains of rice, curries, pickles, papadums… the works. i overheard a group of guys at the next table arguing about the spice level of the fish curry - one of them was practically weeping. i think he’s a serious curry head.

Speaking of locals, if you get bored, [Kochi] is just a short drive away. there’s a whole other vibe going on there. i’m trying to avoid the tourist traps, you know? i’m more interested in the gritty, the real. i stumbled across this little street art collective near Mattancherry - it’s wild. huge murals covering entire buildings, depicting everything from ancient gods to psychedelic animals. it’s like a secret underground gallery. i heard that the guy who runs it, a dude named Arun, is a total legend. he’s apparently been painting the city for decades.

I’m trying to document everything with my camera, but honestly, my battery is dying faster than my sanity. i’m thinking of investing in a solar charger. or maybe just accepting my fate and becoming a permanent resident of Rajan’s guesthouse.

Here’s the gear list, because someone always asks:
Camera (obviously) - needs a new battery. like, yesterday.
Sketchbook - for capturing the chaos.
Notebook - for scribbling down random thoughts and half-remembered Malayalam phrases.
Portable charger - currently MIA.
Sunglasses - essential for surviving this heat.
A healthy dose of cynicism.

I’m also trying to find some good coffee. it’s a struggle. most places serve this weak, milky stuff that tastes vaguely of sadness. i’m on a mission. i’m hoping to find a place that actually knows how to brew a decent espresso. i heard that [The Roastery] has some decent beans, but it’s a bit of a trek.

Seriously, this place is a sensory overload. the smells, the sounds, the colors… it’s exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time. i’m starting to think i’m going to spontaneously combust from sheer heat.

Check out TripAdvisor for some decent restaurants: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g298872-Kochi_Kerala.html

Don’t forget to check out the spice markets - they’re insane. i almost got trampled by a herd of tourists trying to buy cardamom.

Okay, I’m going to go lie down before i completely lose it. need to recharge. and maybe find a decent cup of coffee.
