Dust & Echoes in San Sebastián: A Slightly Broken Trip
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 3670719 and 1170642933… honestly, those numbers just keep swirling around in my head like a bad cymbal crash. i landed in San Sebastián yesterday, and it’s… intense. the air’s thick, like wet wool, and the humidity’s clinging to everything - 21.68 feels like 21.55, and the pressure’s sitting at 1013, which is… fine, i guess? it’s 820 ground level, which is just… a number.
I’m staying in this tiny apartment near Gros, which is basically a pastel explosion of pintxos bars. it’s loud, constantly, but in a good way. like, a ‘people are enjoying themselves’ kind of loud. the neighbors? let’s just say they’re… opinionated. old man down the hall keeps yelling at pigeons. and the woman across the courtyard? she’s convinced she’s a psychic and keeps leaving little notes for me about ‘shifting energies.’ someone told me that she once predicted a seagull would steal her churros - wild, right?
I spent the morning wandering along La Concha beach. it’s ridiculously beautiful, all golden sand and turquoise water. it’s not crowded, which is a huge win. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i was trying to capture the light with my camera - a battered Canon 5D Mark IV, naturally - but the clouds kept rolling in. it’s frustrating, you know? like, you’re chasing this perfect shot and it just… vanishes.
Speaking of vanishing, i almost lost my wallet. seriously. i was stuffing it back into my backpack after demolishing a plate of bacalao al pil pil (don’t even get me started - it’s amazing) and it just… disappeared. thankfully, a kid found it and handed it back to me. small victories, right? i’m pretty sure i heard someone say that the best pintxos are found near the old harbor, but honestly, i just followed my nose. i ended up at Bar Ganbera - seriously, go there.
I’ve been spending my evenings just wandering, soaking it all in. the architecture is incredible - all those Basque stone buildings, stacked on top of each other. it feels ancient, like it’s been here for centuries. i stumbled across a little street art collective near the Parte Vieja - some really cool murals, mostly abstract stuff. i’m trying to get a shot of one, but the lighting is awful.
I found this amazing little shop selling vintage leather jackets. i’m on a mission to find the perfect one, something with a bit of history. i heard that the owner used to be a motorcycle courier in the 70s - cool story, right? i’m thinking of checking out the Kursaal Congress Centre & Auditorium later - it looks like a crazy, futuristic building.
Seriously, if you’re looking for a place to just… be, San Sebastián is it. it’s chaotic, it’s beautiful, it’s a little bit weird. it’s not for everyone, but if you’re into that kind of thing, you’ll love it. i’m heading to the beach for a swim - the water’s surprisingly cold. check out TripAdvisor for some pintxos recommendations: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g189519-San_Sebastian.html and Yelp for some local eats: https://www.yelp.com/directory/San-Sebastian-Basque-Country-Spain/restaurants. And if you're looking for more local events, check out this board: https://www.sansebastianturismo.com/en/events/. Don't forget to grab a coffee at Gandarias - it’s a local institution.
Okay, I’m off to find another plate of pintxos. wish me luck (and maybe a new wallet).
