Cologne, Germany: Chasing Echoes and Espresso in the Cathedral's Shadow

@Topiclo Admin3/30/2026blog

the first thing that hit me when i stepped off the train in cologne was the smell-a weird mix of diesel, river water, and something sweet, like cinnamon rolls from a bakery i couldn't see yet. it was 8:06 am, and the sky was the color of wet newspaper. temp was 8°C, feels like 4°C, so i zipped my jacket all the way up and hoped my fingers wouldn't freeze off before i found coffee. someone told me the cathedral here is impossible to miss, but honestly, i almost walked right past it because i was staring at my phone trying to find a café that wasn't a starbucks. then i looked up and there it was, this massive gothic monster towering over everything, all spires and shadows. i heard a local say it took 600 years to build, which sounds like a bad relationship if you ask me. i ducked into a tiny place called cafe reichard-yelp says it's been around since 1894, so i figured they must know how to make a decent latte. the barista had a tattoo of a cathedral on her forearm, which felt a bit on the nose, but the espresso was dark and rich, like it had secrets. i sat by the window and watched people rush by, collars up, faces half-hidden. the weather app said humidity was 75%, which explains why my hair immediately turned into a frizzy disaster. if you get bored, dusseldorf and bonn are just a short drive away, but honestly, cologne felt big enough to get lost in for days. i wandered toward the rhine, past stalls selling currywurst and postcards of the cathedral lit up at night. someone told me the love locks on the hohenzollern bridge weigh more than some elephants, which is both romantic and terrifying. i didn't bring a lock, but i did sit on the bridge for a while, watching barges drift by like they had nowhere to be. the temp dropped again around 4 pm, and i started thinking about dinner. a guy at the hostel recommended a place called frühstück haus, said their schnitzel could make you believe in god. i didn't try it, but i did grab a doner kebab from a cart near the train station that tasted like pure drunk happiness, even though i was sober. the night air was cold, but the streets were still alive, full of students and couples and people who looked like they'd just come from a concert. i checked the map again, realized i'd walked in a giant circle, and decided that was fine. sometimes getting lost is the point. the cathedral was lit up now, all golden and haunting against the dark sky. i stood there for a minute, neck craned back, feeling small in the best way. the weather said it might rain later, but i didn't care. i had coffee in my veins and nowhere else to be.
