chicago's frozen fever & the quest for perfect shots

@Topiclo Admin3/27/2026blog

i just poked out the door and manny absolutely howled at the 9°C blast with a feels-like of 6.6. my camera gear's already fogging up inside the bag. bleh. but hey, every photographer loves a good humidity torture session, right? here's 62% humidity and pressure cooker skies-perfect for dramatic clouds over the *bean.

so out first light. helped this old man from pilsen adjust his tripod. "you kids today, always fussin' with them magic boxes," he grumbled. wise words? maybe. first stop:
millennium park. fog clung to the lakefront like someone spilled hot cocoa. tried shooting the bean-got 3 shots before some tour group decided to photobomb with ice cream cones. local advice? never trust a stranger's elbow to lean on that dome.

grabbed coffee at
wilson's café they serve this swamp muck that somehow costs $8. swore a yelp reviewer said "you'll cry-laugh at this latte art," but honestly? felt like a scam. checked the reviews later-half the city's mad about their oat milk ration. guess i'll try the danish next time.

later, brave the
navy pier. hate crowds, but the golden hour reflections on the ferris wheel? tears. wind?

i heard from a dude at the farmers market
'if you're bored, milwaukee's just a dash away-don't waste your breath on Michigan ave unless you like sketchy vibes'. took his words with

historians here would have meltdowns. saw a sign: "this site haunted since 1840081808". looked it up. turns out that's when some carriage accident happened? weird. tried photographing the old courthouse but that darn shutter couldn't sync fast enough.

ending up at
the old tavern on dunbar. slammed door, whiskey sour, and this guy rants about how gentrification killed the jazz scene. raw as hell. if you wanna live like it's 1919 minus the bootlegging, duck down here he yelled.

got back home freezing. checked feels like-yep, still feels like 6.6.
never again without thermal undies. but the shots? all there. wait for floods next time*-seriously, this lakefront trail flooded last week. saw it via tripadvisor. made me look sideways at that "short drive to milwaukee" guy. //maybe he's onto something//
