Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. i landed in bristol yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. the air smells like wet concrete and something vaguely floral, which is a confusing combo, you know? the pressure’s at 1027, feels like 9.36, temp’s hovering around 9.88-11.41 - it’s like a permanent autumn drizzle, but with a slight, unsettling warmth. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

my flight landed at bristol airport, which is smaller than i expected, like, seriously tiny. it felt like stepping into a vintage travel poster. i grabbed a cab - a genuinely grumpy guy named dave - and he gave me this whole spiel about the best places to avoid. which, naturally, made me want to go there.

first things first, i needed caffeine. found this place called ‘the black sheep’ - it’s tucked away on a side street in bristol’s harbourside area. the barista, a guy with a surprisingly intense handlebar mustache, just stared at me while i ordered a double espresso. it was strong. like, aggressively strong. i’m pretty sure it could have powered a small city. check it out: Bristol Restaurants on TripAdvisor

wandering around, i stumbled upon this street art scene - it’s everywhere. like, seriously, every other wall is covered in some kind of bizarre, colorful mural. it’s not the polished, Instagram-friendly stuff, though. it’s gritty, chaotic, and feels… lived in. i overheard some guys talking about a legendary graffiti artist called ‘shadow walker’ - someone told me that he only works at night and leaves cryptic messages hidden in his art. wild, right?

spent the afternoon exploring bristol’s harbourside. it’s a proper mix of old and new - Victorian warehouses next to trendy bars and restaurants. i grabbed a pint at a pub called ‘the anchor’ - it was packed with locals, all arguing about something (probably football). the beer was decent, the atmosphere was… intense. i heard that the pub’s landlord, a woman named agnes, has a secret stash of vintage vinyl and a penchant for telling terrible jokes.

“Don’t go near St. Nicholas Market after dark,” a guy in a leather jacket told me, taking a long drag from his cigarette. “It’s… unsettling. And the pigeons are aggressive.”

seriously, the pigeons are a menace. they’re bold, they’re brazen, and they’re actively trying to steal your chips. i’m not kidding. i saw one attempt to snatch a whole sandwich right out of a guy’s hand. it was epic.

found a cool little record store called ‘vinyl vortex’ - it’s crammed full of records, tapes, and posters. the owner, a skinny guy with bright purple hair, was incredibly knowledgeable and recommended a bunch of obscure bands i’d never heard of. i bought a few records, mostly just because i needed something to fill the space in my backpack.

if you get bored, bath, bath, and bath are just a short drive away. i’m thinking of heading over there tomorrow to check out the roman baths. apparently, they’re pretty impressive. i also heard that there’s a really good curry house near the baths - i’m craving some spice.

overall, bristol is… weird. it’s not a place you can easily categorize. it’s gritty, it’s creative, it’s a little bit unsettling, and it’s definitely memorable. i’m not sure i’d call it ‘beautiful,’ but it’s got a certain charm. and honestly, after a few days of this rain, i’m starting to appreciate the gloom.

seriously, don’t miss the street art. and watch out for the pigeons.
