Brest, France: Damp Socks and Unexpected Accordions
okay, so brest. i didn't plan to end up here, honestly. the numbers - 2997577 and 1250615711 - they just… appeared on a napkin at a gig in Berlin. Seemed like a sign, right? Turns out, signs can lead you to places where the wind tastes like salt and the rain never really stops.
I just checked and it’s drizzling sideways, a proper Atlantic hug. Not a cozy one, more like a damp, insistent one. The kind that soaks through your boots and makes your socks feel like sponges. I’m currently huddled in a tiny café, nursing a coffee that’s probably stronger than I am, and trying to process the sheer… Breton-ness of this place.
It’s not what I expected. I pictured… well, I don’t know what I pictured. Maybe something more picturesque, less… grey. But there’s a raw beauty here, a resilience in the weathered stone buildings and the faces of the locals. They’ve clearly seen some storms.
I spent the afternoon wandering around the *Port Vauban, which is massive. Boats everywhere. Seriously, a floating city. Someone told me that the marina is a haven for yacht owners from all over Europe, especially during the summer. Apparently, it’s the place to be seen. I mostly just felt seasick and slightly out of place, but hey, that’s travel, right?
I stumbled upon a little market selling galettes - savory buckwheat crepes. Got one with ham, cheese, and an egg. It was… surprisingly good. Like, really good. I overheard a couple arguing about whether it was better with or without béchamel sauce. It was intense.
“Don’t even think about ordering the seafood platter at Le Galion. Trust me. You’ll regret it. Unless you like spending the next twelve hours… elsewhere.”
That was a drunk guy at the bar. Seemed pretty adamant about it. I’ll probably still try it, though. I’m a sucker for a good gamble.
If you get bored, Quimper and Douarnenez are just a short hop away. I’m thinking of heading to Quimper tomorrow - apparently, they have a really cool cathedral. I found a few recommendations on TripAdvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g1932113-Activities-Quimper-Vacations.html.
I’m also trying to find some decent live music. I’ve heard rumors of a jazz club tucked away somewhere near the Place de la Mairie*. Yelp says it’s worth checking out: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=jazz+club&find_loc=Brest,+France. The humidity is insane here, by the way. My hair is currently defying gravity.
Oh! And I saw a guy playing an accordion on the street corner. Just… randomly playing an accordion. It was surprisingly charming. Like, unexpectedly charming. It’s moments like that that make traveling worthwhile, you know? Even when your socks are damp and you’re questioning all your life choices.
I’m checking out a local forum for more tips: https://www.brest.maville.fr/. The temperature is hovering around 5 degrees Celsius, and the pressure is 1022. Feels like 4.15. Not exactly beach weather. But hey, at least it’s an adventure. Right?
Someone else warned me about the seagulls. Apparently, they’re ruthless. “They’ll steal your chips before you even know what happened,” she said. Noted. I’m keeping a close eye on my galette.
