Bordeaux: When the Wine List Feels Longer Than Your Life
so here i am, standing in bordeaux, staring at a wine list that’s basically a novella. you’d think after a few glasses i’d feel more eloquent, but nah-i’m just hungry and slightly confused. the weather? apparently it’s *7.1°c right now, which is basically “i’m sorry you’re here” in celsius. i just checked and it’s 7.1°c out there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
anyway, i heard from a guy at the bar that the best croissants in town are at pâtisserie david. he said it with the intensity of someone revealing a state secret. so i went. and yeah, they’re good. buttery, flaky, the kind that makes you question all your life choices up to this point.
if you get bored, saint-émilion and arcachon are just a short drive away. someone told me the dunes there are “life-changing,” but i suspect they just hadn’t had enough wine yet.
"the wine here? it’s like the city’s blood type. you either get it or you don’t."
that’s what a local whispered to me while pouring a glass of something red and serious. i nodded like i understood, even though i was still thinking about croissants.
random tip: if you’re into museums, the capc bordeaux is weirdly cool. not your typical “look at the old stuff” vibe-more like “oh, is that a melted couch?” art. i liked it.
oh, and tripadvisor says the best time to visit is spring, but honestly, if you’re here now, just wear layers and blame the weather for your mood swings.
anyway, i’m off to find more wine and maybe a baguette to cry into. bordeaux, you’re beautiful and confusing and slightly damp. i’ll be back.
p.s. if you want more bordeaux gossip, yelp* has a whole thread about the best hidden wine bars. apparently one of them is behind a butcher shop. i’m not even kidding.
