Birmingham, Alabama: Where the Sweet Tea Flows and the Ghosts Whisper (Probably)

okay, so. birmingham. i didn’t plan to end up here, honestly. the numbers - 4058553 and 1840001403 - they just… appeared on a napkin at a dive bar in Nashville. felt like a sign, you know? a cosmic nudge. and here i am.

let’s just say it’s… different. i just checked and it’s drizzling a bit, a sort of damp, persistent chill that seeps into your bones. feels like 11.7, which is depressing, even for someone who thrives on melancholy. the pressure’s decent, though - 1025 - so at least the air isn’t crushing me. humidity’s a solid 46%, which means my hair is currently staging a full-blown rebellion.

I’m trying to get a feel for the place, you know? It’s got this… weight to it. History, obviously. Civil Rights history, specifically. You can feel it in the air, thick and heavy like humidity. I spent a good chunk of yesterday wandering around the *Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Seriously, go. It’s… intense. Check out their website: https://www.bcri.org/.

I overheard some serious gossip at a diner this morning. Apparently, the
Red Cat Restaurant is the place to be for brunch. Someone - a woman with a truly magnificent beehive hairdo - swore by their biscuits and gravy. “Honey,” she drawled, “those biscuits are like a hug from your grandma.” I’m skeptical, but I’m willing to investigate. Yelp says it’s pretty popular: https://www.yelp.com/biz/red-cat-restaurant-birmingham.

And speaking of locals… if you get bored, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville are just a short hop away. I’m thinking of checking out the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. Space! Always a good distraction from existential dread.

I’m staying in a little Airbnb near
Five Points South. It’s… charmingly dilapidated. The wallpaper is peeling, the plumbing makes unsettling noises, and i’m pretty sure i saw a spider the size of my hand. But hey, it’s cheap. And the neighborhood has a cool vibe. Lots of quirky shops and cafes. I found this amazing vintage store, Rumors, on 16th Street South. They had some seriously killer 70s dresses. TripAdvisor has some decent reviews: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g43234-d1286783-Reviews-Rumors-Birmingham_Alabama.html.

Someone told me that
Vulcan Park and Museum is a must-see. Apparently, the view from up there is incredible. I’m thinking of heading up there tomorrow. I also heard a local warn me about the traffic around Avondale*. Apparently, it’s a nightmare during rush hour. Good to know.

Honestly, birmingham is… unexpected. It’s not flashy or glamorous. It’s got a quiet dignity, a resilience that’s really striking. It’s a place that’s still figuring itself out, still grappling with its past. And maybe that’s what makes it so compelling. I’m not sure how long I’ll stay, but for now, i’m embracing the chaos. I’m also desperately searching for a decent cup of coffee. Any recommendations? Check out this local coffee board: https://www.reddit.com/r/birmingham/.

Okay, gotta go. The plumbing is making that noise again…
