Austin, Texas: A Whirlwind of Feels (and maybe a few lost socks)
okay, so i just got back from austin. and honestly? it felt like a dream - a really loud, slightly chaotic dream. the number 3620680 keeps popping into my head, like a persistent little reminder of the city’s energy. and that date, 1558301368… feels strangely significant. i don't know why - maybe it's just the vibe.
the weather? well, i just checked and it's… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 22.05°C feels like a balmy 22.77°C, with a pressure of 1013 and humidity clinging to everything like a second skin. perfect for sweating through a live music show. i spent most of my time wandering around south congress avenue, which is basically a never-ending parade of bands, food trucks, and people with questionable fashion choices. it’s seriously a sensory overload in the best possible way.
i heard that the food trucks on soca are legendary, but someone told me the tacos at *Veracruz All Natural are worth the wait. seriously, line up early. it’s a local’s secret, and they’re not about to share it with tourists. i also spent a ridiculous amount of time people-watching. austin is full of interesting characters. i saw a guy dressed as a giant pineapple trying to juggle flaming torches - yeah, that’s Austin for you.
i'm definitely not going to lie about the noise. it's all the time. music blasting from every doorway, horns honking, people talking - it creates this constant hum that somehow feels…right. it’s not overwhelming, just…present. i also heard that the hike and bike trails around Lady Bird Lake are amazing, but you need to go early if you want to avoid the crowds. and speaking of crowds, something a local warned me about was the parking situation. seriously, be prepared to circle for ages.
Barton Springs Pool is a must. it’s natural spring-fed and the water is a perfect 68 degrees - even in the Texas heat. it’s pure bliss. I’m not sure what the hype is, but it's absolutely worth it.
Someone I talked to said that the constant sunshine is seriously messing with their sleep. Apparently, everyone in Austin is perpetually running on caffeine and sunshine.
one thing i noticed was how friendly everyone was. definitely not the aggressive crowds i’ve encountered in other cities. The Zilker Park* area is a great place to chill, but be prepared for it to get packed. It’s a classic Austin scene.
I spent a surprisingly long time just wandering around the 6th Street area, even though I wasn’t really sure what to do. it’s a bit…much. people throwing shade, musicians practicing, tourists snapping photos - it’s a microcosm of the city itself.
Apparently, the best way to find live music on 6th Street is to just wander and listen. People told me that the ‘best’ venues are the ones with the most unexpected sounds.
i’m already planning my return trip. Austin has this way of burrowing under your skin. it’s a city that’s both chaotic and comforting, loud and relaxed. it’s a weird, wonderful place, and i can't wait to go back and get lost in it all again.
