alor, indonesia: why my camera got foggier than my future (and i kinda love it)

@Sofia Lane3/14/2026blog

i'm sitting on a creaky wooden dock in alor, my camera bag soaked through, and i can't decide if i love it or hate it. the heat is kissing my neck in that humid, clingy way that makes you wonder why you ever left your air-conditioned apartment. as a freelance photographer, i came here chasing light-those golden hour glows you see on instagram that make everything look like a goddamn paradise. what they don't show you is the constant battle with condensation that turns your expensive lens into a foggy nightmare the second you step out of the ac.

i just checked the weather app and it's 22.81°c with humidity at 93%-that's basically just under a hundred percent, so i'm basically marinating. feels like 23.57? my ass. i'm sweating through my shirt and my camera's sensor is probably crying salty tears. the pressure sits steady at 1012 mb, which is probably why the sky looks like a washed-out blanket. yay.

here's the spot i've been camped at:

the locals call this area 'pantai pasir panjang' but nobody can pronounce it right. i tried to take a long exposure of the waves last night and my shutter stuck because the humidity got inside the mechanism. i'm not crying, you're crying.

i've been asking around for hidden gems. i overheard a fisherman at the market bragging about a secret cove with phosphorescent plankton.

he said that if you swim there at night, the water lights up like a galaxy under your feet. but beware of the jellyfish-they're tiny and vicious.

i haven't found it yet, but i'm determined. it's not on any TripAdvisor list, that's for sure. if you insist on following lists, check out the alor hot springs on tripadvisor-Hot Springs on TripAdvisor.

as for food, yelp surprisingly has a few entries. i tried 'warung sari bunda' after reading a review that claimed their nasi goreng would change my life-Yelp: Warung Sari Bunda. it didn't, but the chili paste was a solid 8/10. still better than my attempts to cook instant noodles on a propane stove in my guesthouse bathroom (don't ask). i also found a local board where someone named dede posts daily catches-Alor Travel Forum.

if you get bored of alor's mellow vibes, the islands of lembata and flores are just a short boat ride away. i've heard rumors about komodo dragons over there, but i'm too busy fighting fungus on my lens to care. someone told me that the ferry to kupang gets canceled more often than not, so if you plan to hop islands, take a mental health day and just chill.

last night i got drunk on the cheapest bintang at a guesthouse called 'penginapan surya'. the owner, a grizzled guy named edo, slurred out some advice:

the best sunset view is at the hill behind the mosque. go there at 5:30 pm, bring a jacket, and don't forget your camera. also, the monkeys steal hats.

i went this evening and almost lost my cap to a daring macaque. the sky did that pink-orange thing that makes you forget you're sweating buckets. i got one decent shot before my battery died from the humidity. classic.

speaking of shots, here are a few from my time here (not all of them are blurry, i promise):

i've been messing around with lightroom presets that make everything look vintage, because why not? it's my coping mechanism for the fact that my gear is probably ruined. also, the internet here is slower than a snail on sedatives, so uploading anything is a nightmare. i'm writing this on my phone with 1% battery, hoping it saves.

i also heard another rumor from a kid selling bracelets:

there's a cave full of bats near the village of uwi. if you shine a light, they swarm out like a dark cloud. but the entrance is slippery and there's a snake that lives there-he's friendly though.

i might check that out tomorrow if i can find a guide who isn't scared of snakes. my guide yesterday ran away when a lizard crossed the path. i can't make this up.

if you're into history, alor has some weird megalithic sites that no one talks about. i found an article on a site called 'indonesia ancient' that says there are stone graves older than the pyramids-Indonesia Ancient: Alor Megaliths. the article is half speculation, half broken english, but it's a great read when you're stuck indoors because it's raining sideways (it does that here). the weather can shift from pounding sun to sudden downpour in minutes, which is a blessing for my lens, honestly-it washes the salt off.

here's another image, this one is supposed to be of a traditional village but i think i accidentally captured a chicken instead:

and one more, just because the colors made my tired eyes happy:

overall, alor is a mess. a beautiful, humid, bug-ridden, internet-starved mess. i've taken maybe 5 good photos in two weeks. i've eaten things i can't pronounce. i've been sunburned in places i didn't know could burn. and i'd probably do it again. maybe.

if you're planning a trip, bring silica gel packs for your gear, a rain cover, and a healthy disregard for comfort. also, check the ferry schedule at the port (or just bribe someone, i'm kidding, maybe not). and if you spot a guy named tommy on the alor travel board, take his advice with a grain of salt-he once told me there's a bar that serves free пиво until midnight; turned out to be a lie, but we still had fun.

oh, and before i forget-here's a link to a fantastic dive shop that i've been coerced into promoting because they gave me a free tank of air once-Dive Alor. they'll take you to reefs that look like alien cities.

anyway, my battery is officially at 0. i'm signing off before my phone dies completely. if you have questions, i'll probably answer in three weeks when i find wifi. stay weird.
