Zwolle Vibes: A Messy Love Letter to This Dutch Surprise

so here i am, typing this from a creaky wooden table in a cafe that smells like cinnamon and rain. zwolle. never heard of it before this trip. now i can't stop talking about it. the numbers at the top? 2754848 and 1528263150? no idea what they mean-maybe coordinates, maybe my brain glitching. but the weather data? that's real. temp's hovering around 11°c, feels like 9.81°c, humidity at 68%. basically: bring a jacket and a good attitude.

i rolled in on a wednesday, expecting nothing. left on a friday, planning my next visit. zwolle is one of those places that sneaks up on you. cobblestone streets, bikes everywhere, and a vibe that's equal parts sleepy and electric. like it's holding its breath, waiting for you to notice it.

"you haven't been to the museum de fundatie? are you even in zwolle?"

a local asked me that while i was waiting for my coffee. apparently, it's the crown jewel here. i went. it's...fine. but the real magic? the canals. they're everywhere. you can walk along them for hours and never get bored. or just sit and watch the swans fight over breadcrumbs. your call.

if you're into food, zwolle won't disappoint. i stumbled into a place called *de librije (yes, the fancy one with three michelin stars). didn't eat there-budget, remember? but the smell alone was worth the walk. instead, i hit up brouwcafé de beiaard, a local brewery with beers so good they'll make you question your life choices. check it out on Yelp.

i just checked and it's 11°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. for me, it's perfect wandering weather. cool enough to keep you moving, warm enough to not regret leaving your hotel.

and if you get bored,
kampen and nelly are just a short drive away. or so i heard. didn't make it there myself, but someone at the bar swore by it.

someone told me that the best fries in town are at
frietboutique de uitsmijter*. i didn't believe them until i tried them. now i'm just mad i didn't eat there twice.

zwolle isn't trying to be amsterdam or rotterdam. and that's why it works. it's quiet, it's weird, it's exactly what i didn't know i needed. if you're planning a trip to the netherlands, don't skip it. and if you do, well, more zwolle for me.

p.s. bring cash. some places still don't take cards. old school, but charming.
