Weird Vibes in Fussa: A Tokyo Outskirts Adventure
okay so i ended up in fussa by accident, like i was supposed to go to shinjuku but the train went the wrong way and boom, here i am. it's this random suburb of tokyo, feels like it's stuck in the 80s or something. the weather? oh man, it's freezing. i just checked and it's 3.97°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i'm typing this with cold fingers, so bear with me.
anyway, fussa is weird. it's got this american military base nearby, so you see these random english signs everywhere. like, "burger ranch" and "diner 55" popping up in the middle of nowhere. it's like tokyo's forgotten cousin who still listens to hair metal.
*the base is the main gossip here. someone told me that the locals either love it or hate it, no in-between. some say it brings in weird tourists, others say it's the only reason the bars stay open past 8pm. i heard that the nightlife is basically just americans and japanese people awkwardly nodding at each other in smokey izakayas.
if you get bored, tokyo and yokohama are just a short train ride away. but honestly, fussa has its own charm. like, there's this tiny coffee shop* called "morning dew" that a local swore by. said it's the only place that knows how to make a decent latte. i didn't go, but i'm taking their word for it.
here's a map if you wanna see where the hell i am:
and some random pics i found that kinda capture the vibe:
anyway, if you're into weird, off-the-beaten-path tokyo suburbs, fussa is your jam. just bring a jacket. and maybe a sense of adventure. or don't. i'm not your mom.
