Wandering Through Guanajuato: Cobblestones, Churros, and Chaos

the first thing that hit me about guanajuato was the color. i mean, it’s like someone took a box of crayons, shook it real hard, and just went wild on every building. walking through the streets felt like being inside a kaleidoscope that someone’s toddler got ahold of. and honestly? i’m here for it.

i checked the weather before heading out-12.1°c, feels like 10.8°c-so yeah, it’s brisk. perfect for wandering with a hot café de olla in hand. if you’re the type who likes to sweat through your shirt by noon, maybe this isn’t your vibe. but for me? chef’s kiss.

now, let’s talk about the streets. they’re narrow. like, “if two cars meet, one has to hug the wall” narrow. and there are tunnels. actual underground roads that feel like you’re in a post-apocalyptic movie. i heard from a local (over a plate of enchiladas mineras) that these tunnels used to be rivers. wild, right?

“If you think you’re lost, you’re probably on the right path,” a street vendor told me while selling candied apples. I didn’t know if he was being philosophical or just trying to sell me more apples.

i wandered into the mercado hidalgo, which is basically a sensory overload in the best way. smells of fresh tortillas, sounds of vendors shouting, and colors everywhere. someone told me that the churros here are life-changing. they weren’t wrong. i ate three. don’t judge.

if you get bored, *san miguel de allende and león are just a short drive away. but honestly, guanajuato’s got enough going on to keep you busy for days.

i also checked out the
museo de las momias. yeah, it’s as creepy as it sounds. but also fascinating? i overheard someone say it’s “the most mexican thing ever.” i’m not sure what that means, but i’m not arguing.

here’s a pro-tip: if you’re into photography, the light here is
chef’s kiss. golden hour? more like golden three hours. and the people? so friendly. i got lost (shocker) and a random abuela walked me to my destination, chatting the whole way about her cat.

for food, check out
truco 7. it’s a local favorite, and i heard it’s where the hipsters hang out. or maybe that was just the guy who sold me a handmade scarf. either way, the food’s legit.

and if you’re into nightlife, the
calle jónica is where it’s at. bars, live music, and enough mezcal to make you forget you’re in a foreign country. just don’t blame me if you wake up with a new tattoo.

lastly, if you’re planning a trip,
tripadvisor* has some solid reviews on where to stay. but honestly, just wander until you find a place that feels right. that’s the beauty of guanajuato-it’s chaotic, colorful, and completely unforgettable.

oh, and if you’re wondering about the numbers at the start-3986984 and 1484104201-i have no idea what they mean. maybe it’s a secret code? or maybe it’s just the universe messing with me. either way, i’m here for it.
