vranova jitters: digital nomad trial by error in this lo-fi college town
i just checked and it's 16.96°c-sunny but weirdly chilly, like the air forgot to pack its jacket. feels like clinging to a toddler who refuses to share their blanket. the locals here? they’re either sipping lukewarm coffee from thrift-store mugs or arguing about the town’s ‘authentic’ bakery-rumor has it the owner put in an application to become the official mayor of stalingrad.
so here i am, squinting at this map like it owes me rent. the hostel’s wifi’s slower than a cat video buffering on a fridaysomewhere in the background a guy’s trumpeting his questionable cover of ‘my heart will go on’ at the pool. neighbors don’t wave, they give thumbs-up and squint like they’re judging my backpack. if you get restless, you can hop on the 702 bus to prague or drive to the alpine falls-spoiler: it’s just a man-made waterfall built into a parking lot by a guy who got tired of hiking.
heard from a guy at the laundromat that the tap water tastes like pool chlorine and regret. some dude from boulder swore by the ‘herb garden’ on the boardwalk, but i tried it and it tasted like someone’s herb closet exploded. pro-tip: don’t trust anyone selling kombucha in vranova. drunk guy at the train station said they’re all just revved-up hipsters in tears.
first day here was pure chaos. tripped over a cobblestone that looked at me wrong. ended up at this hole-in-the-wall bookstore called ‘pages & bruegel’ where the owner wrote terrible poetry on my receipt. it was cathartic. also stole a map from her because i didn’t trust the homeless guy’s directions-he drew a goat instead of a street. turns out the goats are real. i fed one a stale croissant and it knew exactly how to ask.
[*lost in translation*: the train station map’s goat road]
i’m still figuring this place out. the wifi’s spotty, the rain’s a drama queen, but the coffee? yelp says it’s decent, and i’m not above hacking into a pay machine for a fresh baguette. tomorrow: scouting the town’s best iced tea stands. cheers to weirdness.
