Vladivostok: Damp Socks and a Whole Lotta Fish

okay, so vladivostok. where do i even begin? i’m elara, by the way, and i’m a botanist. mostly. right now, i’m mostly just…here. i’d been chasing rumors of some seriously weird moss growing near the coast, and well, here i am.

let’s just say the moss is…complicated. but that’s not even the weirdest part. i just checked and it's drizzling sideways, a proper, bone-chilling dampness that seeps into everything. my socks are currently plotting a rebellion against my feet. seriously.

this place…it’s got a vibe. a heavy, salty, slightly melancholic vibe. like a really good Russian novel, but with more seagulls. i spent a good hour just watching them squabble over scraps near the *Golden Bridge. it was surprisingly captivating.

food. oh, the food. fish. so much fish. I swear, every other storefront is selling some variation of smoked, pickled, or grilled fish. I tried something called “torzhki” - little fried fish cakes. they were…an experience. someone told me that if you don’t like fish, you might as well just book a flight somewhere else. they weren’t wrong. I’m considering a deep dive into the local markets - maybe I can find some edible seaweed that isn’t already swimming in vinegar. and the neighbors! if you get bored, Nakhodka and Ussuriysk are just a short hop away. I’m thinking of checking out Nakhodka - apparently, they have a really interesting maritime museum. I need a break from the moss, honestly.

Pro-Tips (because apparently I’m doing lists now):

*Footwear: Invest in waterproof boots. Like, really waterproof. My current socks are staging a full-scale revolt.
*Language: Brush up on your Russian. English isn’t exactly widely spoken.
*Bargaining: It’s expected in the markets. Don’t be afraid to haggle (politely, of course).
*Seagulls: They are bold. Guard your food with your life.
*Explore the Russky Island:* Apparently, it’s got some stunning scenery. I’m adding it to the list.
