Vijayawada: My Illustration Adventure in the Sweatbox

landed in vijayawada and immediately my skin started singing a slow song about melting. the air feels like someone’s breathing furnace air directly onto my face. i just checked and it’s basically a human-sized pressure cooker out there, hope you enjoy being tenderized by the sky. my sketchbook’s already warping at the edges.

staying near the temple district where the dust hangs in thick golden clouds. locals keep giving me wide-eyed stares when i pull out my watercolors-probably because i’m sweating onto their sacred steps. found this tiny chai stall run by a guy who calls himself ‘spice master’. he pours chai like it’s a holy ritual, and honestly, it’s the only thing keeping me from dissolving.

the krishna river’s a muddy beast at sunset-perfect for smudging watercolors into abstract nightmares. spent three hours trying to capture the way the light hits the temple spires, but kept getting distracted by monkeys stealing my eraser crumbs. someone told me that the river’s got a current that’ll snatch your flip-flops if you look at it wrong. i believed them and now i’m barefoot and paranoid.

if you ever run out of excuses to move, guntur’s a scooter ride away through fields that look like they’ve been dipped in curry powder. heard whispers of a mural festival there that’s supposed to be mind-blowing, though the only thing blowing my mind right now is the heat haze. tried sketching a street food vendor today-his hands moved so fast they became a blur of turmeric and chili powder. my lines just melted off the page like butter.

found a hole-in-the-wall art supply shop that smells of old paper and desperation. the owner gave me a free brush because he said my ‘sweat had artistic merit’. weird flex but i’ll take it. also discovered that the humidity makes ink bleed in fascinating ways-maybe i’ll embrace the mess.

for real though, check out this Vijayawada food crawl if you want your stomach to have an adventure. and this local art forum has some cool underground galleries. i also found this tourism board that lists hidden temples-perfect for sketching in the shade.

my hostel’s AC sounds like a dying buffalo, but at least the electricity hasn’t fried my scanner yet. tomorrow i’m hunting for the legendary ‘cursed bridge’ someone mentioned over too many filter coffees. supposedly if you sketch there at midnight, your hands get possessed by ancient artists. we’ll see if my sweat-drenched hands can handle the spiritual load.
