ventura's damp secrets: a picker's soggy adventure

i rolled into ventura with the fog clinging to the coastline like a second skin. the air’s thick enough to chew, and the locals say it’s always like this. i just peeked at the weather app and it's holding steady at 13°C with humidity that could water a whole forest, so if you're into that kind of damp, you're in luck.

and then there are the numbers. everywhere. 5333180 on the motel keycard, 1840019201 on the bus ticket. what do they mean? i don't know. but they’re stuck in my head.

as a vintage clothes picker, my whole vibe is about digging through the past for gold. and ventura? it’s got a treasure trove. but first, the neighbors: if you run out of things to do, santa barbara is only a half-hour drive north, and if you head south, you’ll hit malibu eventually. but honestly, why leave?

i set up my base camp near the pier. the map says we’re here:

and let me tell you, the *pier is where the real action is. it’s windy, it’s damp, and the seagulls are judging your every move. perfect for finding forgotten threads. i hit up sally’s vintage attic first, a place i found on yelp. the owner, sally, is a hoot. she told me: "if you’re looking for the 70s polyester, you’re in the right place, honey." and she wasn’t kidding.

then there’s
thrift haven, a place that smells like old books and regret. someone told me that the owner is a former movie star who’s gone into hiding. i heard that he sells his old costumes for next to nothing. i didn’t see any, but i did find a killer corduroy jacket that cost me five bucks. score.

the next day, i ventured to the
downtown district. the humidity is making my hair do things i never thought possible. but the vintage stores there are stacked. i found a floral dress that i swear was made for a queen. and the best part? the thrift stores here are non-profit, so my money is going to good causes. check out thrift town ventura for more.

someone warned me about the
flea market on sundays. they said: "don't go on an empty stomach, and bring cash." i went anyway. the vendors are characters, and the prices are negotiable. i scored a leather belt that looks like it’s been through the wringer. i asked the seller about it, and he said: "that belt’s seen more sunsets than i have." i believed him.

and the
weather? it’s been drizzling on and off, but honestly, it’s perfect for vintage hunting. the dampness makes the old stores smell even more like history. i just hope you like that kind of thing.

after the flea market, i walked down to the
boardwalk. the ocean is moody today, all gray and churning. the seagulls are out in force, squawking about something. i found a vintage record store tucked away in a corner. the owner, a guy named dave, is playing a neil young record. he says: "that number 1840019201? it’s the code for the safe. but don’t tell anyone i told you." i didn’t know if he was joking or not.

then i stopped at a
coffee shop for a break. the barista, a girl with purple hair, asked if i was looking for anything in particular. i told her i was a vintage picker. she said: "oh, then you have to check out the thrift store near the library. they get new stuff every day." i made a note to go there tomorrow.

the
humidity is still high, but i’m starting to like it. it’s like the town is wearing a blanket of mist. and the vintage finds? they keep coming. i’m thinking of setting up a little online shop when i get back home. maybe call it "5333180 Finds"? nah, too weird.

so if you’re in ventura, embrace the
dampness*. it’s part of the charm. and keep an eye out for those numbers. you never know.
