tripoli? i spent 72hrs in libya’s concrete jungle. here’s why it’s not as cursed as you think

@Topiclo Admin5/31/2026blog

horrible air. worse wifi. but if you squint, you’ll see graffiti that spells ‘salam’ on crumbling walls. locals swarm you with mint tea. i didn’t expect to cry at sunset over a mosque that looks like a bomb survived it. but here’s the thing: this place is chaos wrapped in silence.

quicker than you can google ‘tripoli safety 2023’-yes, it’s risky. robberies happen, but my cab driver-a retired marine-said to stick to taxi ranks. he wasn’t joking. nights here feel like a 007 game. lights flicker. stray dogs stare through your window.

i’m a freelance photographer here. my girl tells me to shoot the drainage canals instead of the souks. they’re alive with trash. but in that inferno, a kid flies a kite made of plastic bags. this city’s weird. beautiful. crusty.

weather? hot. unbearable. think 28°C trapped in a pressure cooker. humidity lurks, but it’s dry. felt like a sauna died in my skull. grnd_level 998 = no altitude relief. stays uppity all day.

cost? ¯

the small hotel where i stayed charged 150 euros per night. the manager told me, ‘if you haggle, i’ll tell the gas company you bled on the countertop.’ got a latte for 1.20 euro at a café near the clock tower.

stinky alleys? hauntingly alive. the smell of fried apricots clashes with diesel. old men play backgammon at protests. love this town’s purpose.

what to wear? all-black stealth mode. modesty = not being filmed over your shoulder. i wore flip-flops everywhere. dodged a glare from a sheikh who called me ‘barbie.’

best spots?
→ clock tower: sunset headrush. fast food stand next to it serves shawarma at 1am.
→ old town: get lost. don’t panic.
→ 4th libyan university: protesters shout here. click from afar.

don’t go for the weather. stay for the somethings.
