Tampa Bay Dreams & Humidity That Hits Different
okay, so i just landed back from tampa bay. it wasn’t…planned, exactly. a friend of a friend needed someone to housesit and watch a ridiculously fluffy *cat named Captain Calico, and honestly, i needed to escape my apartment and the constant smell of burnt toast (don’t ask).
first things first: the air. it’s…present. i just checked and it’s clinging to everything like a second skin, a warm, slightly salty hug. the weather report said fifteen point nine four degrees celsius, but “feels like” was fifteen point seven three, which, honestly, feels like a lie. it’s more like a full-body experience. humidity was eighty-two percent, which explained why my hair immediately decided to stage a rebellion. the pressure was a solid one thousand two hundred and twenty, and the air level matched, which is…science, i guess.
captain calico was a demanding overlord, requiring precisely timed head scratches and a constant supply of salmon-flavored treats. housesitting is way harder than it looks. but between cat duties, i wandered. i spent a lot of time near the waterfront, just…existing. i stumbled upon this amazing little vintage shop in Seminole Heights (check out Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association). seriously, the owner, Beatrice, has the best collection of 70s dresses. i snagged a floral number for, like, twenty bucks. a steal.
food-wise, i mostly ate Cuban sandwiches. i mean, you have to, right? someone told me that La Segunda Central Bakery is the place to go, but honestly, i just kept ending up at whatever food truck looked the most chaotic. it never disappointed. i also tried to find good coffee, which is always a mission. i heard that Foundation Coffee Co. is pretty solid (https://foundationcoffee.com/), but i was too busy chasing Captain Calico to make it there.

"apparently, there’s a secret speakeasy hidden behind a laundromat. you need a password, and the password changes daily. it’s all very hush-hush."

that’s what the barista at a random cafe told me, anyway. i didn’t find it. i’m not even sure i wanted to find it. too much effort.
people-watching was a sport. the locals are…colorful. if you get bored, St. Petersburg and Clearwater are just a short drive away. i overheard someone complaining about the traffic on the Howard Frankland Bridge - apparently, it’s a nightmare during rush hour. someone else warned me about the aggressive pelicans near the pier* - they’ll steal your fries, apparently.
my overall vibe? tampa bay is…sticky. but in a good way? it’s a little rough around the edges, a little weird, and definitely not trying to be anything it’s not. it’s a place where you can eat a cuban sandwich, chase a fluffy cat, and maybe, just maybe, stumble upon a secret speakeasy. check out some reviews on Yelp before you go, but honestly, just go with the flow. and bring a fan. seriously, a fan. you’ll thank me. also, TripAdvisor has some good info on attractions. and if you're into the history of the area, this local history blog is pretty cool.
