strasbourg unlocks a secret vibe, stuff happened here

## quick answers

q: is this place worth visiting?
a: yes if you like seeing art on random walls and don’t mind paying to not be charged. i did see a few street artists but most of them were just doodling on dumpsters. don’t get me wrong-they were good-but if you’re here for masterpieces, this isn’t your spot.

q: is it expensive?
a: no, not super. a beer costs €4 in a bar, which is okay. but if you eat at tourist spots, your wallet will go on a rampage. i had a crepe for €3.50 and felt like a thief.

q: who would hate it here?
a: people who want quiet. the metro is loud, the streets are packed with tourists at noon, and the air smells like old coffee and diesel. if you’re here for a zen retreat, pack your bags.

q: best time to visit?
a: winter. yes, winter. the crowds are gone, the lights on the monuments shine brighter, and you can take photos of strangers without them noticing. spring is okay too if you don’t mind dodging cyclists.

one of the things i kept noticing was how much the city hates tourists. i heard from a local that the mayor tried to charge €5 just to walk in some parts. i didn’t believe it until i saw a sign that said ‘no photos, no friends, no soul.’ it’s aggressive. but maybe that’s the point. the locals want you to blend in, which is hard because everyone’s either a tourist or a starving artist.

another thing? the coffee. i know, right? strasbourg is famous for it. i tried a place called ‘café du vieux port’ and the barista asked me in french if i wanted sugar. i said no, and he took it as a personal attack. i didn’t feel bad-he had a look.

safety is a vibe here. i didn’t see any pickpockets, but i did see a guy selling hotdogs near a mosque. he had a sign that read ‘free if you’re a tourist, pay €2 if you’re a local.’ i left it there. i felt bad.

nearby cities? yep. colmar is 30 minutes by train. it’s prettier and not trying to kill you with art. but if you’re into that chaos, stay.

now, about that sculpture. i later found out it’s called ‘the broken fridge’ and it’s a commentary on consumerism. or maybe it just broke. who knows? i asked a street artist and he said, ‘it’s a fridge. deal with it.’ i didn’t ask for interpretation. i just took a photo of it next to a bus stop sign. classic.

images here show a group of people around a big metal object, which is probably that fridge. another image is of metal pipes with red and green signs-those are the street art markers. the third photo is a car engine, which i don’t even know why it’s here. maybe i took it by accident.

links: tripadvisor, yelp, reddit, a local blog about ‘strasbourg street art fails’ which is 100% real.

(ps: if you’re here, don’t trust the signs. they’re all lies.)
