spray cans, sweat, and stray dogs: my sleep-deprived street art crawl through vellore
i landed in vellore after a brutal bus ride from chennai, my eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep and my mind buzzing with the urge to tag something. the heat hit me like a wall of furnace air-35.25°C on my phone, feels like 34.62, humidity 28%, pressure 1008 mb. hope you like that kind of thing. i could feel the asphalt sweating under my boots.
the city is a maze of narrow alleys, crumbling colonial buildings, and bright saris fluttering like kites. iām here to leave my mark, but also to soak up whatever weird energy this place throws at me. iām a street artist, i go by the tag ācipherā, and iāve been crashing on a friendās floor in the old town. the landlord doesnāt know iām here, but i paid him in street art promises.
hereās a quick look at where iām at:
the locals are a mix of students from the nearby university, rickshaw drivers who know every shortcut, and old men who sit on plastic chairs sipping sweet chai all day. iāve already heard a dozen rumors about where i can paint without getting my ass kicked.
someone told me that the huge wall behind the bus depot used to be a legal spot, but i heard that the police busted a crew there last month for tagging without a permit. another artist whispered that the abandoned textile mill on factory road is still fair game, but you gotta watch out for guard dogs that roam the compound.

*my gear list (what i carry everyday in my backpack):
- 5 spray cans (various colors, always keep a black outline)
- a roll of painter's tape (for quick straight lines)
- a small ladder (folds up, essential for high spots)
- gloves (disposable, keep the mess off)
- a printed map of legal walls (i got it from a local shop)
- a water bottle (the heat dehydrates you fast)
- a pack of chewing gum (keeps mouth fresh when youāre gagging on fumes)
pro-tips for painting in vellore
- always carry a few rupees for the rickshaw drivers; theyāll point you to hidden walls if you tip well
- avoid painting during the midday sun (11am-3pm) - the heat makes cans explode if you shake āem too hard
- if a cop approaches, act like youāre just sketching on paper - they rarely bother artists who look harmless
- use quick-drying paint; humidity is low but the sun is brutal, and you donāt want drips
- know a few tamil phrases; saying "vanakkam" (hello) gets you smiles and maybe a cold water
places to eat that wonāt make you regret it*
- annapurna mess (near the railway station) - cheap, veg, unlimited banana leaf meals
- bistro 12 (if you need wifi and an iced coffee to survive)
- street samosas from the stall opposite the college - but check the oil first, sometimes itās old
- the night market near gandhi park - grilled corn and spicy mango slices are fire
if youāre itching for a change of scenery, pondicherryās breezy promenade is just an hour east by bus, and chennaiās chaotic energy is a two-hour sprint north. both have killer street art scenes if you know where to look.
as the night fell, i found a quiet alley near the old fort and started working on a piece: a giant peacock with neon feathers, a nod to the cityās cultural heritage. iām running on fumes and energy drinks, but the rush of creating something beautiful on a cracked wall keeps me going. i keep thinking about that statistic: 35.25 degrees, but it feels like the city itself is sweating with me. iāve met a few other artists, shared cans, swapped stories. one guy told me that the mayorās office is planning a mural festival next year - if that happens, maybe we wonāt have to hide so much. until then, iāll keep painting under the stars, hoping my work survives the next monsoon.
peace out, and keep your eyes on the walls.
