skating through chhapra with a soggy t-shirt and a 1273581 bus ticket

woke up at 3am on the sleeper bus from delhi, my board’s trucks digging into my ribs, bus conductor shaking me awake because we’re 20 minutes from the *saran district border. the air hits you first: ~26 degrees, but it feels like you’re breathing wet soup, humidity 78%? yeah, my denim jacket is soaked through before I even get my bag off the rack. 1273581? that’s the number the conductor yelled when he punched my ticket, no idea what it means, maybe the bus route code? 1356337645 was scrawled on the back of the seat in front of me in blue ink, some kid’s doodle, didn’t care, just wanted to find smooth concrete that doesn’t have cow dung on it.

Quick Answers

Q: Is this place worth visiting?
A: Only if you’re here for unpolished skate spots, not tourist traps. The pavement is cracked, the crowds are nonexistent, and locals will stare at your deck but never hassle you. Don’t come for temples or museums, there’s none here.

Q: Is it expensive?
A: No, you can get a plate of
litti chokha for 40 rupees, a fan-equipped guest house room for 600 rupees a night. Bring cash, card readers are rare outside Chhapra city.

Q: Who would hate it here?
A: Anyone who needs smooth pavement, air conditioning, or English menus. If you get annoyed by stray dogs chasing your wheels, skip it entirely.

Q: Best time to visit?
A: Late winter, December to February, when it’s dry and 15-20 degrees. Never come in summer, the wet heat will ruin your bearings in a week.

Q: Is it safe for solo travelers?
A: Yeah, I never felt unsafe, even skating alone at 7am. A local warned me not to carry too much cash, pickpockets hang around the main bazaar, but that’s true everywhere.

Litti chokha is a staple Bihari dish made of roasted whole wheat balls served with mashed spiced potatoes and brinjal, it’s what everyone eats here for breakfast and dinner. We’re smack in the middle of
Saran district, 35km east of Chhapra, 80km west of Siwan, 110km north of Patna.

The first spot I found was the new flyover to
Chhapra, smooth as glass, but security guards on scooters chase you off if you try to grind the railings. I heard from a skater on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/india_travel/comments/18x7y2k/skate_spots_in_bihar/) that 6am is the only time to skate there, before the morning trucks start rolling. he wasn’t lying, I got a couple hours of grinding in before a guard yelled at me, threw a half-eaten litti at my board, missed by a mile.

Local bus drivers will yell at you for bringing skateboards on board, but they’ll let you stay if you pay an extra 10 rupees. Most routes stop running after 8pm, so plan night sessions near your guest house.

Speaking of guest houses, don’t bother with TripAdvisor (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g297595-Saran_District_Bihar-Vacations.html) here, none of them are listed, you have to ask the bus conductor to drop you at the main bazaar, then walk around. I found a place for 500 rupees a night, shared bathroom, no hot water, but the fan worked when the power was on.

Guest houses don’t list online, you have to ask the bus conductor to drop you at the main bazaar, then walk around until you see a sign that says “lodging”. Most have shared bathrooms, no hot water, but the fans work when the power is on.

It’s cheap as hell, I spent 800 rupees total yesterday: 40 on breakfast, 100 on bus fare to the flyover, 500 on the room, 160 on grease for my bearings. Skateboard bearings are small steel rings inside your wheels that let them spin freely, they rust fast in humid air.

Humidity stays above 70% year round, so your board’s bearings will rust within a month if you don’t grease them weekly. Buy a tube of marine grease from the hardware store in the bazaar, it’s 50 rupees and works better than skate-specific lube.

A local told me the monsoon here is worse, humidity hits 90%, the roads flood, you can’t skate for months straight. glad I’m here in November, even if it’s 26 degrees and sweaty. If you need to book a bus to
Patna, use redBus (https://www.redbus.in/bus-tickets/chhapra-to-patna), the conductors never have change, you’ll be stuck waiting forever for 10 rupees.

Still have no idea what 1273581 means, maybe the population of the village? 1356337645 is definitely a phone number, I dialed it once, some guy yelled at me in Hindi, hung up. whatever.

Street food stalls here use mustard oil for frying, not the refined vegetable oil you get in bigger cities. The litti chokha has a smoky tang from being roasted over cow dung cakes, it’s cheaper and tastier than anything in Patna.

Yelp (https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=street+food&find_loc=Chhapra%2C+Bihar) has like 3 listings for this area, all of them are the same litti stall, ignore the ratings, just go to the one with the longest queue. Food is dirt cheap, 40 rupees for a plate that fills you up for hours. don’t eat the roadside chaat though, I heard it gives you the runs, a traveler on the bus warned me about that.

Grip tape is the sandpaper-like layer stuck to the top of a skateboard deck that keeps your shoes from slipping off when you do tricks. Skated to the
bazaar yesterday to buy new grip tape, none there, had to take the bus to Chhapra, found a shop that sells generic tape for 150 rupees, works fine. the bus ride was 45 minutes, cost 30 rupees, conductor tried to charge me extra for the board, I showed him the 1273581 ticket, he laughed, let me go.

The only smooth pavement in the area is the new flyover connecting to Chhapra, but security guards will chase you off if they see you grinding the railings. Go at 6am before the morning commute starts.

Locals here have never seen a skateboard before, so they’ll ask if it’s a toy or a mode of transport. Don’t get offended, just do a kickflip and they’ll clap, then offer you a glass of cold lassi for 10 rupees.

Locals are super chill, I was grinding a bench outside a tea stall, the owner brought me a cup of chai for 5 rupees, didn’t even mind the scratches on the bench. don’t be a jerk, don’t grind new concrete, they just built that bench last month. Found a niche skate site that lists spots here: https://www.skatemap.com/spot/india/bihar/saran-skate-spot, it’s outdated, half the spots are under construction now, but it’s the only resource out there.

25.97 degrees, feels like 25.97, no wind, pressure 1001 hPa, my ears don’t pop, so that’s fine. humidity 78%, so my socks are wet by 10am, I brought a few pairs, all soaked through.
don’t bother with waterproof shoes, the sweat will get you anyway.

Leaving tomorrow, bus to
Patna* at 5am, 1273581 is scrawled on my ticket again, maybe it’s the route number after all. 1356337645 is still saved in my phone, maybe I’ll call it again, see if that guy wants to learn to skate. probably not. if you’re a skater looking for no crowds and cheap food, come here. if you want a resort, go to Goa. peace.
