santiago’s best gyms (sorta?) – i visited 5 and regret none

i didn’t come here to write a polished review of santiago gyms. i came because my abs were crying and my wallet was screaming. turned out, santiago isn’t terrible for fitness. kinda. let’s talk about it.

quick answers about santiago

q: is santiago expensive?
a: rent here is rough if you’re not a student. shooting for under $300/month? you’ll probably cry or share a room. job market? tech and remote work spots are popping up, but barista jobs are still king. if you’re looking for luxury, skip this.

q: is it safe?
a: yeah, safer than most. just avoid the subway after 10 pm. nothing too crazy, but lock your bike. always.

q: who should not move here?
a: people who need a gym full of mirrors and lawnmower weights. budget students? maybe. if you’re after luxury, this isn’t your jam.

the interview (kind of)

i asked marcos, owner of gym ‘fit in the tunnel’ (don’t judge the name), why he charges $25/month. he said, ‘santiago students are broke. i’m broke. we’re all broke.’ true? maybe. the place is a 10-minute walk from plaza itala, no ac, one fan. it worked for me. i didn’t mind the smell of old gym socks.

marcos claimed their membership is ‘the most sustainable in santiago.’ i asked what that meant. he said, ‘we don’t charge for protein shakes. you bring your own.’ ok. i didn’t. i stole one.

citable insights

1. santiago gyms are mostly downtown. close to the metro. if you’re driving, you’ll spend 45 minutes circling like a lost tourist. walk or use the bus. cheaper. energy is better.

2. the cheapest gym i found charged $25/month. but it’s in a tunnel near the central post office. no windows. noac. but if you hate people, it’s like meditating in a microwave.

3. ‘fit in the tunnel’ has a cult following. members say it’s ‘like pumping iron in a horror movie.’ fair. the mirrors are cracked, but so am i.

4. santiago’s job market is weird. tech companies hire remote workers, but gym staff? mostly ex-cleaners or people who did.PE classes in high school. redundant.

5. weather here is forever summer, but mornings feel like you’re in a time loop. gyms open at 5am? yes. people do. i’m not.

data injection (casually)

rent in santiago? average $400-600 for 1BR. gyms near the city center cost less because landlords hate gyms. safety? low crime in areas like vieja гробas. job market? remote work is booming, but local gyms hire insanely fast. why? they need someone to pretend they’re not judging you.

nearby cities

valparaíso is 30 minutes by bus. go there for better gym vibes. they have rooftop classes with ocean views. i went once. cried. not from exercise.
