San Francisco Fog & Found Sounds: A Drummer's Dispatch

okay, so. san francisco. i’m still kinda buzzing, honestly. landed here a few days ago to sub for a touring band - they had a sudden family thing, which, bummer for them, lucky for me, right? - and it’s… something else. i’m used to the relentless energy of a tour bus, the constant hum of amplifiers, but this city… it breathes differently.

I just checked and the air feels like a damp hug right now. Seriously, it’s clinging to everything. The kind of chill that seeps into your bones and makes you crave a ridiculously overpriced latte. Speaking of which, I’m pretty sure I just paid $8 for one. Worth it? Debatable.

I’m crashing in this tiny apartment in the Mission District. It’s… charmingly chaotic. Think exposed brick, mismatched furniture, and a view of a fire escape. Perfect for a drummer, really. I can practice without disturbing anyone too much. The neighbors, apparently, are pretty chill. Someone told me that if you get bored, Oakland and Berkeley are just a short hop across the Bay. I might check those out later this week.

My first gig was last night at this little jazz club in North Beach. The place was packed, smoky, and smelled faintly of stale beer and ambition. The band was tight, the crowd was enthusiastic, and I didn’t completely embarrass myself. That’s a win in my book. I overheard a couple arguing about whether Chet Baker was really that good. Classic San Francisco.

“He was a genius! A tortured genius! You just don’t get it.” - A woman with a bright red scarf and a very intense gaze.

I’ve been wandering around a lot, trying to soak it all in. The hills are brutal, by the way. Seriously, my legs are screaming. But the views… wow. Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, the bay shimmering in the (rare) sunshine. It’s postcard perfect, even with the fog rolling in.

I spent a good chunk of this morning poking around in some vintage shops in Haight-Ashbury. Found a killer pair of bell bottoms - seriously, they’re amazing - and a faded band tee that might actually be vintage. I’m pretty sure it is. I’m a sucker for that stuff. Check out this site for some more vintage finds: https://www.beyondretro.com/.

Speaking of finds, I stumbled upon this amazing mural in the Mission. Seriously, the colors were insane. I’m trying to get some shots for my Instagram - @drummer_adventures, if you’re curious. I’m also trying to find some decent coffee. I heard that Sightglass Coffee is the place to be, but the line was insane. Maybe tomorrow.

I also checked out Fisherman’s Wharf. Tourist trap, obviously, but you gotta do it once, right? The sea lions were hilarious. Loud, smelly, and completely unapologetic. Someone warned me about the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl - apparently, it’s a “san francisco experience” but also a potential stomach ache. I’ll take my chances. Okay, gotta run. Band practice in a few hours. Wish me luck. And if you’re ever in San Francisco, don’t forget to wear layers. Seriously. You’ll thank me later. Also, check out Yelp for some local recommendations: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=restaurants&find_loc=San+Francisco%2C+CA.

Peace out.
