Rotterdam Rumble: Rain, Rust, and Really Weird Vibes

okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 3073803 and 1203518899… honestly, those numbers just keep swirling around in my head like a bad dream. i landed in Rotterdam yesterday, and it’s… intense. the air feels thick, like wet wool. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is 100%, and the pressure is 1018 - feels like my sinuses are trying to escape. it’s a weird, beautiful kind of oppressive.

I was immediately drawn to the *Markthal, which is basically a giant, covered food hall. it’s a sensory overload - fishmongers yelling, spices exploding, people arguing about the best stroopwafel. someone told me that the cheese selection is legendary, but also that you might get aggressively offered pickled herring. take it with a grain of salt. i ended up with a questionable-looking sausage roll and a massive iced coffee. it was… an experience.

Spent the afternoon wandering the Delfshaven district. it’s like stepping back in time, all cobblestone streets and old warehouses. the whole area feels a little haunted, if you know what i mean. i swear i heard someone whistling a mournful tune coming from a closed-up shop. it’s a really cool place to just get lost, though. check out the
Euromast for insane views - it’s a bit touristy, but the panorama is worth it.

I’m staying in a tiny Airbnb near the
Kralingse Bos, which is a huge park. my neighbors are a retired accordion player and a guy who collects vintage rubber ducks. seriously. it’s… charming? if you get bored, Amsterdam is just a short drive away.

Here’s the gear list, because someone
always asks:
Waterproof boots (obviously) - seriously, don’t even think about it.
A decent camera - i’m using my Sony a7iii, but honestly, your phone will do.
A portable charger - you’ll need it.
A phrasebook - dutch isn’t easy.
And a healthy dose of skepticism.

I overheard some drunk advice at a bar last night: "Don’t go to the Blaak area after midnight. It’s… complicated."

I also stumbled upon a street art tour - it was led by this guy named Jasper who claimed to have once painted a mural on the mayor’s house (i’m not entirely convinced). he pointed out some seriously wild pieces, hidden in alleyways and on abandoned buildings. it’s a great way to get a feel for the city’s underground scene. you can find more info here: https://www.rotterdamstreetart.com/.

I’m heading to the Cube Houses tomorrow - apparently, you can sleep in one. i’m terrified, but also intrigued. i heard that the beds are tiny and the walls are slanted. it’s a gamble, but i’m always up for a gamble.

And, because i have to link to something, here’s a TripAdvisor review: "Amazing city! The people are friendly, the food is delicious, and the architecture is incredible. Just be prepared for the rain!" https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g189429-Rotterdam_South Holland-Vacations.html

Seriously, this place is a trip. i’m going to try and find a decent coffee shop - i need to recharge. i heard that *De Judpot has some seriously good espresso. i’ll let you know if i’m wrong.

Oh, and one last thing: if you’re looking for a unique souvenir, check out the
Markthal* gift shop. they sell everything from miniature windmills to pickled onions. it’s… a lot.

Final thought: Rotterdam is weird. It’s messy. It’s probably going to give me a headache. But it’s also kind of brilliant.
