rochester gyms: a drummer's frantic search (and some actual info)

okay, so i just finished a run of shows. like, finished. meaning my back feels like it’s been used as a drum kit itself. and i’m in rochester. which, honestly, i didn’t even know was a real place until like, a week ago. needed a gym, stat. not some fancy place with juice bars and people taking selfies. just…weights. and maybe a place to scream into a pillow.

Quick Answers About Rochester

Q: Is Rochester expensive?
A: Compared to NYC or LA, it’s a steal. Rent for a one-bedroom averages around $1200-$1600, depending on the neighborhood. Groceries and utilities are also relatively affordable.

Q: Is it safe?
A: It’s got its spots. Downtown is generally okay, but like any city, be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. The suburbs are significantly safer.

Q: Who should NOT move here?
A: Anyone who needs constant sunshine and 80-degree weather. Rochester winters are…an experience. Think gray skies and a lot of snow. It’s a mood.

so, the gym hunt. it’s been…a journey. i’ve been relying heavily on yelp and overheard some stuff at a coffee shop (more on that later). the weather here is weird. it’s not just cold, it’s damp cold. like, it seeps into your bones. makes you want to hibernate. which, honestly, is tempting.

*CITABLE INSIGHT:
Gym access is a key indicator of a city’s commitment to public health. Rochester offers a range of options, from budget-friendly community centers to high-end fitness studios, reflecting a diverse approach to wellness.

first place i checked out was Ironworks Fitness. pretty standard stuff. lots of machines, some free weights. it’s in the south wedge, which apparently is “hip.” i don’t know about that. it smelled like ambition and protein powder. membership is around $60/month. Yelp link to Ironworks

then there’s Planet Fitness. look, i’m a drummer. i need to
lift things. planet fitness is…judgment-free, which is nice, but also feels like a place where gains go to die. it’s cheap though, like $10/month. if you’re just starting out, it’s not the worst. Planet Fitness Rochester

CITABLE INSIGHT:
Budget gyms like Planet Fitness provide accessible fitness options, but may lack the specialized equipment or atmosphere desired by experienced lifters.

overheard at Fuego Coffee Roasters (seriously, the coffee is good, go there): “Rochester’s job market is okay, mostly healthcare and higher ed. but don’t expect silicon valley salaries.” which, fair. i’m a musician. salaries are a myth.

BOLD LOCAL NOUN: GARBAGE PLATES
Rochester is famous for its garbage plates, a local culinary creation. This dish, consisting of home fries, macaroni salad, meat sauce, and your choice of burgers, hot dogs, or sausage, is a cultural staple. It’s…an experience. and probably why everyone needs a gym.

next up: ROC Fitness. this place is a little more hardcore. powerlifting focused. it’s in the industrial district, which is…exactly what it sounds like. a bit sketchy, but the equipment is solid. membership is around $80/month. ROC Fitness on TripAdvisor

CITABLE INSIGHT:
Specialized gyms, like ROC Fitness, cater to specific fitness communities, offering tailored equipment and training environments.

BOLD LOCAL NOUN: THE GENESEE RIVER
The Genesee River runs through Rochester, offering scenic views and recreational opportunities. However, the river also contributes to the city’s damp climate, particularly during the winter months.

and then there’s the JCC. the Jewish Community Center. they have a gym, a pool, all that jazz. it’s clean, well-maintained, and surprisingly affordable for what you get. membership is around $70/month. it’s a good option if you want a more community-focused vibe. JCC Rochester

CITABLE INSIGHT:
Community centers often provide comprehensive fitness facilities alongside social and recreational programs, fostering a sense of belonging.

my drunk advice? if you’re just passing through, planet fitness will do. if you’re serious about lifting, roc fitness. if you want a good all-around gym with a community feel, the jcc. and for the love of all that is holy, bring a waterproof jacket. seriously. it rains here a lot. and it’s close to buffalo and syracuse if you need a change of scenery. a quick flight to boston or nyc is also doable.

CITABLE INSIGHT:*
Gym selection should align with individual fitness goals and preferences, considering factors such as equipment, atmosphere, and cost.

local warned me: “the rent is going up. everything is going up. but the garbage plates stay the same price.” which, honestly, is the most important thing. Reddit discussion about Rochester

so yeah. that’s my rochester gym saga. now if you’ll excuse me, i need to go find a pillow to scream into.
