Roaming Rome: Lost in the Eternal City's Chaos
so here i am, wandering through rome with my camera slung over my shoulder like a tourist cliché. the weather's doing its usual italian drama thing-11.36°c but feels like 10.54°c, so you're basically wrapped in a scarf pretending it's fashion. humidity's at 76%, which means my hair's staging a rebellion against gravity. perfect for photos, terrible for selfies. i just checked and it's kinda chilly and damp right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
rome doesn't care about your plans. you think you're heading to the colosseum, but then you spot a tiny trattoria with a handwritten menu and suddenly you're three glasses of wine deep, arguing with a stranger about whether carbonara should have cream (spoiler: it shouldn't). the streets twist like they're trying to confuse you on purpose, and somehow that's exactly why you love it.
overheard this gem from a barista: "the best gelato isn't near the tourist spots, it's where the line is full of locals holding their own containers." so naturally, i followed a group of elderly women with mismatched containers and found the most life-changing pistachio gelato. someone told me that the place near piazza navona is overrated anyway, so maybe skip it unless you enjoy disappointment.
if you get bored, naples and florence are just a short train ride away, but honestly, rome's chaos is enough to keep you occupied for weeks. i keep stumbling into ruins that aren't even marked on maps-just chunks of ancient history sitting between a laundromat and a vegan bakery. it's like the city forgot to tell you where the good stuff is hidden.
random bolded advice: *always carry cash because that cute little wine bar that looks straight out of a movie? they probably don't take cards. and don't trust anyone selling skip-the-line tickets* outside the vatican-it's a scam, and you'll end up in a group tour with fifty other people who regret their life choices.
"the best time to visit the trevi fountain is at 3am when it's just you, a few drunk backpackers, and the sound of water that makes you question your life choices."
that's actual advice from a hostel bunkmate who smelled like regret and cheap wine. he was right though.
here's a map so you don't end up as lost as i usually am:
and because no post is complete without photos that make you wish you were here:
want more chaos? check out tripadvisor's rome guide or find a local airbnb experience that doesn't involve standing in lines. seriously, just wander. that's the whole point.
